Fresh Santa Rosa Beach Fishing Reports

So the last few trips after the full moon are producing killer numbers of nice trout. And the good news is we dont have to run far to get them so even on the 2 hour trips you can be successful.

Summmer is definitely in full swing and the heat is getting up there with it. Summertime fishing is fun! Most of the time you’re on vacation and spending tons of time at the beach and eating good food. Why not go fishing as well? While its not my favorite time of the year to fish, due to the heat and the bite, it can still definitely be productive. Just like us humans these fish get hot as the temperature rises. Once we get into July and August, the fish start to get lethargic. They dont want to expend the energy chasing bait as much, just due to the water being so warm. However, with the right bait, and tactics you can get them to bite. The biggest factor is timing. Early morning and later evening’s are the best in the summer. After about 11am the bite tends to shut down due to the heat. So getting on it early and later is key. Lastly, if the redfish and trout bite is slow, you can always target spanish mackerel which are a fun fight on light tackle! Hope this report helps and look forward to seein you on the water!

Fun day in the gulf. Caught and released alot of red snapper and triggers. Caught some great mingo snappers for dinner!

Spring break is upon us and the fishing is getting better each day! The redfish have been loving this warmer water inshore. Offshore: the Spanish mackerel have shown up in full force nearshore and in the Destin harbor. The kings won’t be far behind! A Mahi Mahi was even caught off a local pier this week! Offshore is only going to continue to get better in the coming weeks and I look forward to taking advantage of it. In the surf along 30A the pompano run has officially begun I do believe. Good numbers of pompano being caught along with some bull reds and nice black drums this time of year. We have had some pretty cold weather here in the panhandle to start off our Winter. Temperatures have even dipped down in the low 20's which is pretty cold for our area. That being said, there are still fish to be caught. I've been targeting fish in deeper creeks and bayous where the water stays warmer and more consistent. This can take a little bit of searching, but when you do find the fish, they tend to be stacked up. With winter fishing I like to get a later start to the day. This allows the sun to come up and let the fish warm up a bit and get moving. Another added bonus to winter fishing is Sheepshead! These delicious fish tend to move into our bay and hang around structure once the water gets cold. In addition to trout and redfish these are some of my favorite fish to target in the winter.
