Getting around on shore can be tricky, we spent a little time the first day watching people come and go to see where it was safe to drive.
It is well worth it to pay a guide for a trip out into the bay. The harbor is very convenient and easy to find

It's the first time I have fished Matagorda in June, so I have no basis for comparison. This was a fun outing, even though the bite was tough. FWIW, I would do it again tomorrow with this guide. Very fun time.

I would recommend quality footwear for the boat, we chose to wear Keen Newport H2 Sandals as they were comfortable and gripped very well on the deck. Breathable thin long sleeve shirts worked out nicely and of course lots of waterproof sunscreen.
