When I booked this trip a few months ago, ill was honest I was a little skeptical. The rates seemed too low compared to trips I’ve taken with Guides before. I booked the noon to 5pm trip with Johnny because I’m in Mexico, and who wants to get up at 430am to go fishing? The day before the trip I received a message from Johnny, and he said he strongly recommended that we switch from 6am-11am because the afternoon fishing was extremely slow. He did this knowing that he could have booked someone else for the morning trip and gotten two trips that day Instead of one, which is honest anywhere in the world, but unheard of in Mexico.

So we switched, and met Johnny at 6am at the marina and headed out fishing. The pictures I took at sunrise were breathtaking. We saw a TON of humpback and Grey whales, went passed lovers Beach, the arch, sea lion Island, and many more beautiful photo op sights. some people pay more $ just to see all these sites, usually $75-100 per person per trip and u would have to book all these trips separately , so we had $400-500 minimum worth of value before we even began fishing! More than the cost of the trip! Reports everywhere were that fishing was super slow because water was cold. We saw at least 50 other boats trolling the same areas as us, and the entire trip I saw ONE other fish caught besides our boat. I won’t reveal Johnny’s secret, but I’ll tell u I plan to try to implore it freshwater fishing back home. It’s incredible, handmade by him, I’ve never seen anything like it, and other boat captains wanted to buy it from him lol. In our boat, we boated 8 Sierra Mackerel, the most prized table fare around here, and we easily should have limited out but my girlfriend hadn’t done this type of fishing yet, her arms got tired and she lost a few fish because she didn’t keep enough tension on the line.

The bite stopped around 9am and Johnny took us to deeper water to bottom fish for some bigger trophy fish. Let me tell u, this is not easy fishing, dropping your line to 225 feet and then immediately jerking and reeling, jerking and reeling all the way up the water column and then repeating the process. My girlfriend quit immediately, and after 4 series my arms were tired too lol. I told Johnny that he had worked hard, more than done his job, and that I didn’t care that we would head in an hour and a half early. He said, oh no, I want to catch you more fish…. Who does that? So we watched him do this jerk jigging at 6-7 different spots over the next hour and a half, his arms had to be like jello when he was done. Suddenly he said he hooked one, handed me the reel and I reeked in a GORGEOUS Bonita fish!!! On the way in, he took even more time to stop at all the famous spots along shore and take pictures of us holding the fish. He took these with his professional camera, and then emailed me the photos later.

And the absolute highlight of my entire trip to Cabo? A sea lion swam up to our boat on the way in, let us touch him and hand feed him our leftover bait! It was a moment in nature that I never thought I’d experience. When we got back to shore, he took one of the mackerel and the Bonita to the restaurant, they prepared the fish 9 different ways, and it was the best meal of the trip, and when I got the bill I didn’t even think it was right because of how affordable it was. This was our best day in Cabo by far, and I HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend hiring johnny. Don’t waste your time with anyone else!

Johnny welcomed my son and I at the ramp to docks when we arrived at 6:30 am . After fueling, picking up fresh live bait and licenses we departed Cabo. We then had a boat ride for about an hour we started fishing. We limited out on Sierra mackerel in about a hour with frequent doubles. We the trolled and jigged fir yellowtail, grouper, sea bass and caught all the above. We reached our limits and we headed back to Cabo, took pictures and arrive back at the dock at 2:30 pm.  We selected a sea bass and Sierra to be taken to restaurant to be prepared.He then arranged for our fish to be cleaned and packaged.

First off, I want to say how AMAZING Johnny was as a person and a captain.

This was my husband and I first time in Cabo for our honeymoon and was very afraid to get out of our resort. Johnny was nice enough to pick us up OUTSIDE of the resort. He picked us up at 5:15am SHARP and drove to the marina. Luckily there was a convenient store as we were walking down to the marina for us to pick up some snacks and drinks.

Once we got on the boat he took us to a spot and IMMEDIATELY we caught a fish. His fishing skills and technique was amazing that I have not seen in Texas. Even if we didn’t catch a fish, it would’ve still been amazing. I mean come on, it’s fishing so you cant expect Johnny to GUARENTEE you will catch one.

We saw some whales on the way to our spot! that was exciting so he slowed down for us to take some photos.

We took the 3 Macros we caught to a local butcher to filet the fish, $3 a fish and took it to a local restaurant called La Chatita and the way they cooked our fish was AMAZING.

Johnny is honestly a very genuine, knowledgeable, and nice man. WE 100% RECOMMEND him and will very likely use him again once we come back to Cabo.

Had a great time with Mr. Johnny Sanchez. Although we didn’t catch much (1 skipjack, 1 grouper, lost a huge whopping fish and many bites), we enjoyed great weather, bumping music, beautiful views, and excellent company. We saw whales and fed sea lions. Johnny never gave up and was in excellent spirits despite our slow day, willing to try just anything to land us a fish. Johnny offered to even take us out again for free in a few days but we would be flying out by then. He also called us an Uber back to our hotel as we were without our phones. It was refreshing to be surrounded with a genuinely kind, thoughtful, and hard-working captain. Would recommend Johnny to anyone considering taking a trip.

We started the day on a not so great weather. We trolled around for almost 4 hours, not even a finch. However, those long hours weren’t so bad. Johnny’s nice human qualities and generally a like-able and social aptitude kept the conversation going and kept interesting. Of course there were plenty of times where I was able to enjoy peacefulness and humbling moments in the vast ocean with my thoughts. I didn’t have much hope for catching the fish. But, he encourage positive fish hope. Life is nothing without hope, I reminded myself. However, my day out on the ocean on a boat was already accomplished. One of the desiring factor for ocean fishing for me was to rekindle the humbling feeling of what nature allows and denies.

Miraculously, at our last hour, we caught a Mahi Mahi or Dorado. He introduced me to the fillet folks on the marina, help vacuum seal half of the fish and rest plain fillet for $10 USD. Then introduced me to a restaurant next door, who then prepared 7 different ways of the fresh catch cooked elegantly and deliciously. For roughly $10 USD.

Be prepared to pay for you own sports fishing license $15. And bait for $20.

Without any expectations, I had several pleasant experiences. These conclusively makes Johnny my top goto guy in charter fishing in Los Cabos San Lucas. Small group of 2 or 3 will be most ideal as his current boat is small. But, he is ambitious to grow. I as consumer of experience want nothing more than for him to be successful and build his business! I will see hime again and will definitely give him my business.
