Fishing in Cabo San Lucas

The unofficial "Marlin capital of the world," Cabo San Lucas is the perfect choice for any traveling angler. Combining quality with immense quantity, the location promises and delivers on once-in-a-lifetime fishing experiences. From sturdy 20' super pangas to true deep sea behemoths, Cabo is home to a colorful variety of charter options, with excellent quality of service not only being a professional obligation, but also a matter of local pride.

Known For

Cabo San Lucas fishing has gained an international reputation that is hard to beat. Positioned at the southernmost tip of the Baja California Sur, the town is located right on the meeting point of the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez. With deep waters just a couple of miles from the shore, multiple seamounts and banks accessible in a day trip, and warm waters all year round, this is a haven for the world’s most sought-after big game fish.

The Marlin fishing Cabo San Lucas is famous for is a year-round phenomenon. The only thing you need to think about is the time of year. Striped Marlin can be found in the slightly colder months, with Blue and Black Marlin appearing as the waters get warmer. Whether you are hoping to hook your first Billfish, score a slam, or compete in one of the world’s most famous tournaments, Cabo has the answer. Come in October to witness - or take part in - Bisbees Black and Blue Tournament and experience one of the highlights of the world’s sportfishing calendar. The largest payout in the history of sportfishing took place here in 2006, reaching over four million dollars. Will you be there to see it beat its own record?

You don’t have to take part in a Cabo fishing tournament to see the best of what the area has to offer, though. The best fishing charters in Cabo will tailor every single trip to make sure you are looked after, whatever your previous experience. This could involve catching the ‘joker’ of the seas inshore as you target Roosterfish. Otherwise, you could be pulling in what will shortly become the best ceviche you have had in your life, as you target the area’s prolific Dorado (Mahi Mahi) population.

Want to know where to fish? Most Cabo deep sea fishing trips will take you to the banks and ledges offshore, including the Golden Gate Bank (famous for being the best place to fish in Cabo San Lucas), which is 15 miles north of the marina, the area south of the Lighthouse, which has great fishing from 2-15 miles offshore, the Gordo Banks, 22 miles northeast of Cabo San Lucas on the Sea of Cortez side, and the famous Finger Bank, a Billfishing paradise that is located 50 miles offshore.

Rules & Regulations

All anglers must have a valid Sport Fishing License before fishing in Mexican waters. Fishing licenses for all FishingBooker charters are either included in price or can be purchased from the charter operator. One rod or line with hook is allowed per person in the water. It is not allowed to sell the catch or profit in any way financially from recreational sportfishing. Engaging in sportfishing less than 250 meters away from swimmers is not allowed. Fish caught while sportfishing can not be filleted aboard the charter from which it was caught.

Types of Fishing

Trolling is by far the most popular type of fishing in Cabo San Lucas, with most charter boats using a combination of live bait, artificial lures, and teasers. Bottom fishing is also an option when targeting Snappers and Groupers, and more experienced anglers might enjoy jigging, popping, and even fly fishing.

Visit Cabo in January, and you will enjoy some of the best weather of the year. This is usually a dry month, with average temperatures in the mid 70s. Striped Marlin is common, Roosterfish is inshore and Yellowfin Tuna is offshore.

The conditions are good but spring storms are a possibility. Watch out for colder currents arriving from the north, potentially making fishing change from day to day. Inshore fishing is very good and the bottom bite heats up offshore.

Spring Break sees great conditions in Cabo San Lucas with very little rain. The Marlin bite can slow but will come back into play towards the end of the month. Yellowtail, Amberjacks, and Spanish Mackerel show up inshore.

With temperatures in the mid 80s and humidity generally lower than usual, April has great conditions with virtually no rain. You will find Striped Marlin and Dorado biting offshore, with smaller Dorado, Yellowtail, and some Roosterfish inshore.

The weather really begins to heat up now. Offshore, you will find a good Striped Marlin bite, with very good Dorado action too. Closer to shore, the Roosterfish season begins to kick off for real.

With water temperatures averaging 94 degrees, this is a month for those who like it hot. Fish offshore for Striped Marlin, big Tuna, Blue Marlin, and Wahoo. Inshore, Roosterfish is on fire and Snappers and Groupers are biting.

On average, July is the warmest month in Cabo and the fishing is hot, too. This is a month for Billfish fans, with Striped Marlin, Sailfish, and Blue Marlin all being potential catches. Very big Roosterfish can be caught inshore.

You guessed it - it's hot. August is the wettest month of the year, but don't let that put you off. This is the month for big game anglers, with Black and Blue Marlin coming into the mix. Inshore, Wahoo and Dorado join Roosterfish.

Tropical storms may threaten, but when the weather allows, this is one of the best months for fishing. You will find big Yellowfin Tuna, Blue and Black Marlin, and Sailfish to name a few. Sailfish and Roosterfish can be caught inshore.

The world famous Bisbees Black and Blue Tournament is the talk of the town: this is something no sportfishing fan will want to miss. With cooler weather and big fish, this is the best fishing month in Cabo San Lucas.

Temperatures and humidity drop. Don't miss the WON Tuna Jackpot at the beginning of the month. Fishing remains varied, with Striped Marlin replacing Blacks and Blues and Sailfish, Dorado, and Wahoo bites being very strong.

If you want to land a lot of different species in one day, December is the month for you. The main target is Striped Marlin, with Wahoo, Dorado, Yellowfin Tuna also being good. Inshore, you may find Sailfish and smaller Striped Marlin.
