Join Messin' Around Fishing Charter and get ready to discover the Puget Sound with Captain Mathew Messing. As a local guide and experienced angler who grew up fishing the surrounding waters of Seattle, Capt. Mathew has caught just about every possible species there is here.
You'll be fishing from a 25' Defiance San Juan sport fisher, built locally, designed for fishing the Puget Sound. The boat is versatile and equipped with state-of-the-art features and technology. She comes with the latest Raymarine electronics and safety equipment, downriggers, and a live bait tank for Lingcod. You'll also have a private toilet, fridge, and ample space for 4 people to fish at the same time. Capt. Mathew welcomes children ages 5 and up, and he's got kids' sized life vests for them as well.
You'll be targeting salmon by trolling, using the latest and best fishing equipment available. If you're fishing for Lingcod, you'll be using live bait. All of the captain's tackle is in excellent condition, so you can expect a top-quality experience at all times.
Bring any snacks and drinks you'd like, and your catch will be cleaned and filleted free of charge.
You'll buy your fishing license on the boat for $10 or free if you book a private charter. Check the weather dress appropriately. Get ready for an incredible day on the Puget Sound and book your next adventure with Messin' Around Fishing Charters!

A Great Catch

Our charter started off meeting Matt at the end of the pier. There was a large sign out which made it incredibly easy to know where to go. The boar is in a covered location so it was comfortable and easy getting inside- especially for someone as accident prone as I am. We were able to catch 8 salmon in total- but would have limited out if we lose so many (our skill issue). Matt was great about giving us pointers as far as our reeling techniques and answered any questions about salmon types, legalities of fishing, and making sure our catch cards were filled properly. When we got back to the boat launch Matt fileted the fish and gave some to Lucy and her kids-adorable seals. It was the perfect first experience.

Fishing the Puget Sound

We booked this charter hoping to give our boys a fun, memorable fishing trip—and it absolutely delivered. The weather was perfect, with calm waters, a gorgeous view of the Seattle coastline, and even sightings of porpoises, jumping salmon, and sea hawks. Our guide worked hard to get us on fish, and he did—1 coho and 10 pink salmon (plus a king salmon we released because it was out of season). The boys loved every minute, from reeling in their fish to bringing home a cooler full of fresh salmon. We left with great memories, beautiful photos, and enough fish for several meals. Highly recommend for anyone wanting a successful day on the water in the Puget Sound. Thanks Matt!

An unforgettable day on the water!
Took my 12-year-old nephew out for his first salmon fishing trip and couldn’t have asked for a better experience. We spent the day on the Sound with perfect weather, great company, and even better fishing. We caught our limit of salmon and had a blast doing it. The captain was fantastic—supportive, patient, and really helped make it fun and educational for my nephew. It was a great way to introduce him to fishing, and he’s already asking when we can go again. Highly recommend, and we’ll definitely be booking another trip soon!

We had such a terrific day on the water with Captain Matt. My teenage nephews loved it and caught several pink salmon back to back. The boat was perfect for the 4 of us and it was a surprise and a delight that crab pots were also a part of the experience and bounty. We had a delicious dinner with both the salmon and crab that we caught and Captain Matt filet and prepared for us to take home. Wonderful day of fishing and experience we will never forget. Thanks again!

Easy/Fun experience resulted in rare catch

Captain Messing made the experience easy and fun, setting everything up for us novice fishermen (one of us had some knowledge and experience). We ended up catching a nice 24” King Salmon. When we got back to the slip, Captain Messing prepared the fish for us. When he cut into the fish, he noted that it was a White King Salmon, very rare and prized catch. Based on his comments, we went back and researched that these were truly rare and prized, and was delicious!
