Honolulu is often described as the “racing pulse” of Hawaii, and an adventure aboard Five Star Sportfishing Hawaii more than helps the city live up to this reputation. Jump aboard – it’s time to get those pulses racing!

It’s safe to say that a love for angling inhabits every part of the Five Star Sportfishing Hawaii team and owner - Capt. John’s life. He’s been fishing as a hobby for as long as he can remember, was part of the Marine Corps for over 27 years, and got his first captain’s license in 2005. In 2018, he decided to relocate to Hawaii and start running charters here. Now, he’s running his charter business together with Capt. Chris Rubin and thinks Hawaii is one of the best places in the world to chase Marlin and Mahi Mahi and loves introducing guests to these waters.

You’ll be casting off on board a 38’ Bertram offshore sport fishing vessel. She’s capable of accommodating up to 6 guests, and you’ll be able to troll 6 lines in the water once. You’ll have to take it in turns when it comes to the fighting chair – your captain will draw straws to see who should go first! The vessel is also decked out with top-quality navigational and safety gear, so you’ll head to the hotspots in plenty of comfort and security.

No matter your skill level or how long you choose to spend on the water, you’ll have the chance to battle big game fish. Once you leave the harbor, it only takes around 10 minutes or so before Mahi Mahi, Marlin, Tuna, and other hard fighters start to appear. Shorter trips are great options for newbies, whereas longer trips allow you to head up to 40 miles offshore. This means you’ll be facing off against gigantic fish!

Your captain will provide fishing gear, your fishing license, and live, dead, or artificial bait. Keeping your catch depends on how many fish you hook, but generally, you’ll be able to keep around 50 pounds of meat. Come cast off with Five Star Sportfishing Hawaii for an unforgettable adventure

Fantastic Trip

We had an amazing time out on the water with Gabe and Ruben! From the moment we stepped aboard, they made us feel welcome and at ease. Both are incredibly friendly, knowledgeable, and clearly passionate about what they do. Whether you're a seasoned angler or it's your first time holding a rod, they go above and beyond to make the experience enjoyable and educational. They were especially great with our kids—patient, and fun. We caught fish and made unforgettable memories. We can’t recommend this charter enough. Awesome Fishing

Captain and Crew from preparing for the trip all the way to end. Captain was true to his statement of what we can and might not catch. Though I haven't tried other Charter vessels and crew. The RUCKUS will be my first choice to book with. Reason for this is the first impressions and vibes they presented. Their assistance through out the trip to my brother in law and I was extremely awesome. Keep up the great work. Thank you Captain and Crew for the awesome and excellent fishing. Best day!

We had never ocean fished before, and Gabe and Captain Rubin made the trip so fun! They we patient, easy to be with, and worked hard to make our trip a success. Out of the 3 of us fishing, 2 caught fish, and had the best time do it! We will recommend them to anyone we know coming to the island, and if the opportunity arises for us to make this trip again we will plan a trip with them for sure! Thank you Gabe and Rubin for checking this off our bucket list.

3/4 Day Trip (11am Start) on April 14, 2025 • 4 adults

Right from the beginning of the trip, Gabe and Tino were on top of things from explaining what we could expect to showing us how to use the fishing reels. Let me say that we are 10+ years experienced Salmon trolling fisherman on the Great Lakes and this was a completely different experience. What we do know, is sometimes it takes time to locate fish and actively feeding fish on top of it. Gabe and Tino were relentless in making that happen by scouting the area with binoculars for certain birds feeding on bait fish and constantly changing up lures to entice a bite. After a bit of time the first fish struck and we had a 150 pound Marlin on but came off after a minute or so. Over the next hour and a half we were able to land three Mahi Mahi averaging 25 pounds. The family had a great time reeling in fish and Gabe and Tino were awesome to talk with. We instantly felt like long time friends with these two guys. If you have any reservations about booking with these guys, don't. Just book it. I would recommend the 6 hour trip that we booked to allow the amount of time it takes to locate these fish. It's a big ocean!

Great Boat & Crew

Full Day Trip (8am Start) on March 7, 2025 • 2 adults

My wife and I signed up for an 8-hour private charter with Captain Ruben and deckhand Tino (I thought Tino was Tina at first, but it turned into a great laugh – Ruby and Tina, the dynamic duo!). The morning started off rough – rain, waves, and my stomach trying to abandon ship. We ran into a few Mahi schools, but those little guys were picky eaters. Ruby worked hard to switch things up, but no luck... until we hit the west side. Suddenly, the fish were biting! We both landed a Blue Marlin and Mahi Mahi, which made our whole trip! Bonus: We even saw some whales. Ruby (Ruben) and Tina (Tino) were awesome, working tirelessly to make it a great trip. The boat was solid, the crew was amazing, and we both caught our dream fish. Highly recommend!
