Running angling trips out of Quepos, Idra Sportfishing Inshore Specialist invites you to discover everything this top-notch fishing destination has in store for you!
Capt. Ricardo is here to get you on some fish and make great memories together. He specializes in inshore fishing with live bait, which will be caught during the trip. You’ll be using techniques like trolling, jigging, popping, and spinning, depending on what you’re going after. As part of their 4 to 8-hour trips, you can target species like Mahi Mahi, Roosterfish, Snook, Snapper, Spanish Mackerel, and Tripletail, depending on the current season and weather conditions.
Your boat for the day will be a 27’ Costa Boat that fits up to 4 anglers at any time. The boat comes with a toilet and ice box. The price of your trip includes all the rods, reels, and terminal tackle you’ll need for a productive day on the water. Fishing licenses aren’t included, so make sure to get them prior to the trip. You can buy them at the marina (17 USD per person) and they are valid for a week.
You can keep anything you catch as long as it’s legal to do so. Keep in mind that Roosterfish is "catch and release" only. There will be a first mate on board to help you with anything you need. Tips for good service are always appreciated.

Full Day Trip – Inshore on February 26, 2025
We had a great time with Captain Ricardo and Carlos. We booked two full day trips with them as our main goal in Costa Rica was to catch a rooster fish. Our first day out we had a lot of hook ups on possible rooster fish and we landed a nice one and a very large surprise snook. After that we changed spots and caught a variety of species jack crevalle, big eye jack, cubera snappers, rainbow runners and blue runners. We caught multiple “fish of a lifetime” on this trip and the action was nonstop it was one of the best days of fishing we ever had. Our second day we targeted roosters in the morning again and ended up with 4 on the boat and even more hook ups and a nice jack crevalle. Once we both had the rooster fish we were looking for (and even a double rooster!) we went in search of more snappers where we had lots of hook ups and got two nice ones in the boat. It was such a great time and I would highly recommend fishing with Captain Ricardo and Carlos, they are fish whisperers and are great at what they do. If you are looking for action you definitely want to fish with these guys, it’s non stop season! Can’t wait to come back and try for a triple tail!

5 Hour Trip – Inshore on April 13, 2025
Ricardo did a very professional job of getting us on fish on a pretty bumpy half day. We had to run north for bait and it was too rough to try roosters there. Plan B we ran to the fish farm and were able to tangle with some nice Jacks. We left there and ran south to try to get a Rooster fish. I was fortunate to catch a nice one before we called it a day. The boat was well kept and captain and mate worked hard to get us our fish. I’d highly recommend booking with Idra.

5 Hour Trip – Inshore on January 3, 2025
While searching for a guide for a near shore fishing trip with my family I found Capt. Ricardo Puliti and the Idra II of Quepos. After booking a trip online I was promptly contacted by Ricardo so that he could better understand the group ( my two grandchildren, my son, and me -- fishing skills from beginner to experienced) as well as our goals for the trip. Having read several articles about the roosterfish endemic to Costa Rica’s Pacific coast, I asked that we spend at least some of the trip focusing on this beautiful and challenging fish. I did not disclose that I am a retired saltwater flyfishing guide to encourage that even the most basic advice would be given during our trip. On the day of our trip we headed down the coast to a spot close to the surf and bordered by the mouths of two rivers where Capt. Ricardo and Carlos had found roosterfish on previous trips. Almost immediately my nine year old granddaughter landed our first rooster. Within the first hour we had six bites, lost one, and everyone had landed a fish! As the tide changed we encountered a dry spell in which the only excitement came from a small hammerhead shark that showed up for a photo prior to its release. After the tide receded further we got a strike that Ricardo and Carlos immediately recognized as a large roosterfish. While Carlos backed the boat, Ricado coached me while I fought the fish on a short saltwater rod and barrel reel with which my experience is relatively limited. After ten minutes of muscle tiring back and forth battle we landed a sixty inch behemoth! High fives and hugs around, a photo op, and we returned our roosterfish to hopefully foster many offspring. The # one fish on my agenda For this trip to costa Rica was to catch a Roosterfish. I find they are not in season. No one catching. After 4 great enjoyable and productive fishing trips ,still no Rooster. Asked around the docks & this guy idea was mentioned. Well why not ? Last minute, night before I got lucky booked trip for morning. Canceled all my Jungle tours for another chance at a rooster. Was tough. No bites these guys pulled out all the stops, all there tricks and techniques. And as the trip was coming to end we hooked up and landed my Rooster. They Call Him Roosterfish king for a reason. What more can I say.

Booked a charter with Idra Sportfishing and he told me where to be and when. Met them at the marina and they where friendly and excited to catch fish. I wanted to chase a rooster fish but durning my stay in quapos, Ricardo informed me it was a bad time of year to fish for them for they where hard to find. He did not shoot down the idea but redirected us to tuna fishing to make sure we caught fish and had the best trip possible. That moring we caught plenty of tuna including bonita and yellowfin tuna. Later in the charter we did attempt to catch rooster fish but did not have any success due to the wrong time of year. Ricardo and his co captain made great conversation and showed there skills from driving the boat to running the rods and picking where to look for fish. When a fish bites there just as excited as you are and do everything possible to land it in the boat. These guys are great and will do everything they can to get you in the fish. I will definitely be fishing with them again when I'm back in Costa Rica.
