Fishing in Thailand

If there's a place in the world that can cater to every type of angler, it's Thailand. From saltwater game fish to some of the most varied freshwater giants, these waters have it all. You just need to find the right Thailand fishing charter and you'll be set for one of the wildest angling adventures on the planet.

With access to both the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea, deep sea enthusiasts will be spoiled for choice. In these waters, you'll have the opportunity to reel in everything from Giant Trevally, Snapper, and Grouper to Mahi Mahi, Wahoo, and Billfish. For the best angling, depart from Phuket or Khao Lak and explore the bountiful FADs located offshore in the Andaman Sea.

But as great as Thailand's saltwater fishing is, the freshwater action is even more intense. That’s all thanks to the various resort lakes and private ponds you'll find across the country. These are stocked with some of the biggest and most diverse fish in the world.

Among others, Thailand's resort lakes are full of South American species such as Redtail Catfish and Arapaima. There are also Giant Mekong Catfish, huge Siamese Carp, Alligator Gar, Chao Phraya Catfish, and more. What's best though is that these fish are extremely well taken care of. Because of this, they grow to IGFA record-worthy sizes.

Besides saltwater fishing, the island of Phuket is also home to freshwater lakes where you can wrestle the aforementioned giants. Bangkok also has numerous fishing parks, and there are guides who'll offer to meet you there and transport you to the fisheries outside major cities. In Thailand, it's all about finding the right fishing guide.

Rules & Regulations

Anglers fishing in Thailand don't have to purchase fishing licenses. However, angling is prohibited in areas designated as marine parks. Resort lakes also operate under their own rules that you'll have to follow.

Thailand Fishing Seasons

January

January is when most people come to Thailand—and for good reason. The weather is perfect, with temperatures a comfortable 20-30°C (around 70-85°F). It's also peak fishing season, so get out on the water!

February

The weather and fishing remain excellent, but the crowds start to thin. This could make February the finest month for fishing in Thailand. Tuna, Sailfish, Marlin, and Mahi Mahi are all biting at their best.

March

The temperature on land is heating up, so you're going to want to head to the water. Giant Trevally is getting more and more rewarding to fish for, while Tuna, Sailfish, and Marlin are still as good as ever for big game anglers.

April

April is when Thai people celebrate New Year so enjoy the celebrations before cooling down on the water. Or, get away from it all and go south of Racha Noi to jig for Giant Trevally. Other game fish will also be biting.

May

The monsoon season hits Thailand. This is not the time for sunbathing, but most exotics in the fishing lakes are loving the break from the heat. Look out for Arapaima, Giant Mekong, and Redtail Catfish.

June

The south sees a slightly lower amount of rainfall this month, which can make for some more enjoyable fishing. Sailfish are caught out of Phuket in large numbers but be prepared for choppy waters.

July

Rain picks up along the Andaman coast, but this doesn't put off the Sailfish or the anglers chasing after them. Most charters won't be operating in the Gulf of Thailand until September but lake fishing remains solid.

August

The brief interlude in the rainy season is over for sure. August is as wet as it comes in Thailand. But the Arapaima, Carp, and Redtail Catfish love it, and it doesn't put Sailfish or Wahoo off swimming the Andaman Sea, either!

September

The rain starts to die down, especially in the north of the country (although Bangkok is still getting plenty of it). The Gulf of Thailand opens up for business again and Mahi Mahi and Wahoo are biting better than ever.

October

Saltwater fishing starts to pick up for real and will remain good until January. Head to Koh Kut in the Gulf of Thailand for large numbers of Sailfish. Beware of some rain around the islands.

November

Tourist season starts to pick up in Phuket and the beaches will stay busy until April. Expect good weather and great fishing, with Marlin, Sailfish, Tuna, and Mahi all biting—not to mention all the exotics in the lakes.

December

If all you want for Christmas is beautiful weather and excellent fishing, come to Thailand. Expect sunshine, Billfish, freshwater predators, and more. Almost every fish is in season, so come down and enjoy the show!
