Fishing in Gold Coast

Gold Coast is one of the most popular fishing destinations in the whole of Australia, and it’s no wonder. With a year round fishery and a rich variety of both reef and game species, this is a mecca for all types of angler. Whether you are trolling for pelagics or exploring the deep reefs between Tweed Heads and North Stradbroke Island, there is something for everyone here.

Known For

There aren’t many places better known for surfing and deep sea fishing than Gold Coast. The miles upon miles of beautiful beaches have something for everyone, while there is stunning nature inland for anyone who likes to spend time outdoors. Not to forget world class golfing greens and all sorts of theme parks - Sea World, the Rockpools, Dreamworld and more await! Take some time on the water between May and November, and there’s a very strong chance you’ll see Humpback Whales, too.

Rules & Regulations

Queensland does not require recreational anglers to have a fishing license unless they are fishing in stocked impoundments (dams or weirs). Size and possession limits apply to a variety of fish species.

Types of Fishing

If big game fishing is your thing, you should be looking at fishing between December and January. This is when Black Marlin arrive as part of their annual southwards migration. Large numbers of game fish appear in the area at this time of year, with Mahi Mahi, Spanish Mackerel, Sailfish, and Wahoo all making an appearance. Travel slightly further offshore, and you can be in with a chance of a Blue Marlin as well. Fishing is exciting in the winter, too. May to October has some phenomenal reef fishing, with Cobia, Yellowtail Kingfish, Tuna, Snapper, Tailor, Pearl Perch, and many more species up for grabs with traditional bottom fishing or fast-paced deep water jigging. And with an average temperature of around 20 degrees centigrade, this is generally a very comfortable time of year to fish.

Gold Coast Fishing Seasons

January

January kicks off with some of the best deep sea fishing you’ll find all year. Black Marlin is being caught at the beginning of the month, with plenty of other game fish (including Blue Marlin and Sailfish) in tow.

February
Blue Marlin is being caught offshore, with Black Marlin catches thinning out. Don’t despair: Spanish Mackerel, Wahoo, and Sailfish are keeping anglers busy. Pearl Perch is coming into season.
March
As autumn settles in, the fishing changes. Game fishing is focusing more on Yellowfin and Mackerel Tuna, with Wahoo still giving anglers a run for their money. On land, the temperatures drop to a comfortable 16-26°C (61-77°F).

April
As water temperatures drop, the action heats up around the reefs. Amberjack, Cobia, Snapper, Pearl Perch, and Yellowtail Kingfish are up for grabs when bottom fishing or jigging. This is a great time of year to fish Gold Coast.

May
The fantastic reef fishing continues, joined by a reappearance of Yellowfin Tuna offshore. The talk of the town is the Humpback Whale migration. Time it right, and you might get a fishing charter and a whale watch all in one.

June
It may officially be winter, but that doesn’t stop Gold Coast from dazzling visitors with its notoriously pleasant climate and sunny weather. And the fishing is better than ever over the reefs, with monster Cobia being a possibility.
July
Some say winter's the best time for fishing in Gold Coast. The weather’s warm, there are fewer people about, and there's plenty of fish. As well as Cobia, Snapper, and Tuna at the reefs, Tailor and Flathead are caught inshore.

August
If you’re a Flathead fan, get on down to Gold Coast! The Dusky Flathead—probably Australia’s favourite fish—is schooling up in preparation to spawn. Whales are being sighted and Sharks are following close behind.
September

Spring is in the air, meaning mild tropical evenings and sunny days. Temperatures range between 15-25°C (59-77°F), with some wind making waves offshore. Look for Cod and Cobia over the reefs while they’re still there.

October
As the currents warm, the migratory patterns change. Whales are coming to the end of their migration, and the Sharks are thinning out. Sport fishers are polishing up their gear in preparation for the big game season.
November
As warm bluewater currents start moving southwards down the coastline, sportfishing boats come up against Wahoo, as well as Yellowfin Tuna. On land, families should be aware of disruption caused by schoolies week.
December
Summertime, and the living is far from easy—if you’re a game fish, that is. This is the season for both Blue and Black Marlin, as well as Mahi Mahi, Sailfish, Spanish Mackerel, and Wahoo. Happy Christmas!

Fishing is fishing, sometimes you catch fish sometimes you don't. Don't get upset if you expect something and it doesn't work out.
