Fishing in Toronto

As Canada’s largest city, Toronto has a lot going for it. You’ve probably heard about its arts and culture scene, incredible food, and great people, but you may not know just how good the angling action here is. The city sits on the shorelines of Lake Ontario and boasts easy access to this bountiful waterway and more. Head out on a Toronto fishing trip and experience another facet of this vibrant city!

You’ll have plenty of fish species to choose from in both Lake Ontario and its tributaries. Chinook and Coho Salmon are the stars of the show, and coming in at a close second are Brown, Brook, and Lake Trout. You can also target a variety of Bass, Pike, Perch, Walleye, and Crappie.

If you’re coming to target a specific species, head out with a guide to make the most of your time here. This is especially true during the spring and fall Salmon runs, and full day trips are recommended. If you’re looking to get a feel for the waters and land a fish or two, half day trips are a great choice.

Toronto is a big city and, as such, there are plenty of places to wet a line. Most of the city’s charter fleet is located in Port Credit, but you can also head to Ashbridges Bay or Bluffer’s Park if you’re looking for a more central starting point. In the summertime, hop on the ferry and head to the Toronto Islands to fish with incredible views of the cityscape.

Rules & Regulations

Before you set off, make sure to purchase an Ontario fishing license for all anglers between the ages of 16–64. Ontario is separated into 20 Fishing Management Zones. If you’re unfamiliar with the rules and regulations, it’s best to head out with a guide.

Toronto Fishing Seasons

January

There’s plenty of action beneath the ice, with Walleye, Yellow Perch, Trout, and more waiting below. If you don’t want to work for your food, head to the Winterlicious food festival instead!

February

Brave the cold and head onto the ice to enjoy Canada’s winter specialty technique. Target anything from Perch to Pike on Lake Ontario, or make the journey to Lake Simcoe for some real monsters.

March

By the middle of March, smaller bodies of water will start to melt, letting you finally get at all those fish hiding below. Trout, Perch, and Walleye are all on the cards this time of year.

April

Boats finally go back in the water on Lake Ontario. Head out for some early-season Salmon and Trout fishing and head home with a delicious dinner. Walleye are off limits in April.

May

The season is in full swing, with Salmon, Trout, Walleye, and Perch all biting hard. The Bass bite warms up a little slower, but you can still get some great battles in this time of year.

June

Bass season is finally open, and anglers across the city are heading out in search of this season’s record. Catch some fish then enjoy one of the many music festivals going on this month.

July

Celebrate Canada Day with a fireworks display on the Lakeshore! This is a great way to wind down after a day of battling Walleye, Perch, Trout, and Bass.

August

As the waters warm, Salmon move out to deeper, American waters. Walleye and Perch head offshore, too, but you can still jig up your limits of both in a day! The Bass bite is amazing in August.

September

Watch daring stunts at the Canadian International Air Show, or hit the water for a show of acrobatics from Bass, Trout, Salmon, and Pike! There’s plenty to keep you busy in September.

October

The weather has cooled by October, but the fishing is still on fire! Pike, Perch, Walleye, Bass, Trout, Salmon – all your favorite fish are back in shallower water, just begging for a lure to bite on.

November

Bigger boats come out of the water, but you can still get in some great Walleye and Perch fishing. The Toronto Santa Claus Parade is one of the biggest events of its type, and well worth seeing.

December

Shallower sections of Lake Ontario start to freeze over, but there's still a long way to go before you can go ice fishing. Target Bass and Pike from the small boats that are still running, instead.
