Fishing in Windsor

Fishing in Windsor needs no introduction – the area is known both in Canada and the US for its premier angling opportunities. Conveniently located between Lake Erie, Lake St. Clair, and Detroit River – all top-notch fisheries – Windsor is the picture-perfect destination for every passionate freshwater fisherman.

Since there are three different bodies of water to choose from, you better believe that the diversity of catch is fantastic. Muskellunge are the most sought-after species because they grow big in these parts, and there’s plenty of fish for everyone. Lake St. Clair is famous for its Musky bite, not to mention Crappie, Sunfish, Catfish, Panfish, and Carp that all swim in these waters.

Largemouth, Smallmouth, and White (Silver) Bass are popular on the Detroit River, and Musky action is solid here as well. You’ll find Lake Erie less than 20 miles to the south where Walleye, Rainbow Trout, Perch, and Bass reign supreme. Whether you’re going for your next record, to fill your cooler, or just have a great day of ice fishing, Windsor will deliver.

Because fishing is thriving in and around the city, there’s no shortage of experienced guides who organize fishing trips throughout the year. There’s plenty of half day excursions for beginners and families with kids. Seasoned fishers can book full day trips or pick one of the specialized expeditions, where they’ll focus on a couple of species or a particular fishery.

There are over 20 marinas in Windsor where you can find your fishing guide, including Riverside, Lakeview, and Westport Marina.

Rules & Regulations

When fishing in Windsor, Canadian residents need an Outdoors Card and a valid (sport or conservation) fishing licence. Non-residents need the same documents, along with a passport. If you’re fishing for one day, you only need a one-day fishing licence.

Windsor Fishing Seasons

January

The beginning of the year means low temperatures and often excellent ice fishing opportunities. Lake St. Clair is especially good for your ice escapades, and you can target Perch, Crappie, Pike, and Walleye.

February

Make the most of the Family Fishing Weekend this month and take your little ones out to the water and fish for free. If the ice is still strong, target Perch. It’s fun for beginners and kids to catch and it’s easily transformed into a gorgeous dinner.

March

Things are starting to pick up in March – ice is thawing and fishermen are getting their gear ready for the upcoming high season. White Bass is more active in the Detroit River, and Pike, Musky, Walleye, and Perch are biting as well.

April

The sun brings everyone outside, and hungry fish are out there, ready to gulp down your bait. Walleye fishing is superb in the river and on Lake Erie, and Musky are following close behind on the river and Lake St. Clair.

May

The end of the month brings the Victoria Day weekend – anglers from all over Canada use the holiday to come to Windsor and get their share of Silver Bass fishing. The high season is upon us, and just about every species is in the cards.

June

The beginning of summer is probably the best time to go fishing in Windsor. The Musky action is at its best, big Walleye are all around on Lake Erie, and Bass fishing in the whole area is on point. There’s fish for everyone!

July

If you didn’t make the most of the Ontario Family Fishing Weekend in February, in July, you get a do-over. And what a time it is to hit the water – whatever you want to target is on the prowl, be it Musky, Walleye, Perch, Bass, or Pike.

August

Whenever you’ve got free time toward the end of summer, use it to get your line in the water. Delicious Yellow Perch is on the menu at all times of the day, along with Pike, Musky, and feisty Walleye. Bass are going strong as well.

September

In the early fall, you’ll see a lot of anglers on the water, and for good reason – fishing in Windsor is epic in September. The Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass bite is excellent, and let’s not forget about the mighty Musky that can be huge this time of year.

October

There’s still a lot to do in October, be it on one of the lakes or on the river. Different species prefer different weather and temperature, but Largies are very active, as well as trophy-size Musky, and reliable Perch and Walleye.

November

The first half of the month brings good numbers of Musky and Bass. Towards the end of November, most charters take their boats out of the water for the season, and then you can fish for Perch and Bass from the shore.

December

The holiday season brings cold fronts that aren’t friendly towards fish or the fishermen, so things get quiet for a bit. The lull doesn’t last long though, only until Lake St. Clair gets frozen solid, and then, it’s time for ice fishing adventures.
