Fishing in Clearwater

Clearwater fishing charters have been putting anglers on the fish of their dreams for decades. Whether you cast your line on the legendary Tampa Bay or enjoy the red-hot bite on the Gulf of Mexico, good times on the water are all but guaranteed.

The main appeal of Clearwater is that its fisheries are as diverse as they are rich. Inshore waters are the playground of Snook, Redfish, Tarpon, and Spotted Seatrout, to name a few popular species. The nearshore waters sport excellent Cobia, Mackerel, Black Seabass, Snapper, and Grouper bite.

If you’re itching to go after the offshore superstars, then be ready for longer trips to reach the best fishing spots 20–70 miles from land. Here, you can do some bottom fishing for Grouper, Red Snapper, Hogfish, and Amberjack. If you prefer trolling, Blackfin Tuna, Mahi Mahi, and even Sailfish are in the cards.

Book a half day inshore excursion, and spend several hours enjoying fishing with your family. Both shared and private nearshore/offshore trips are on offer, so take your pick based on your fishing preferences.

Fishing in Clearwater is a way of life, so fishing tournaments are an inseparable part of the social schedule. The Old Salt Fishing Foundation organizes numerous tournaments over the year, including the most popular semi-annual “King of the Beach” and Loop Billfish Tournament.

In Clearwater, there’s something for every fishing appetite. Find your next angling adventure and rest assured that Clearwater fishing charters will make it happen!

Rules & Regulations

Anglers who go fishing with a professional guide have it easy – all the licenses are included in the price of the trip, for your maximum comfort. If you’re fishing solo, remember to buy an appropriate fishing license and stay in the loop about the local regulations.

Clearwater Fishing Seasons

January
Winter temperatures in Clearwater are pretty comfortable, so this is a great time to get out on the water. Head to Old Tampa Bay for some Gator Trout or fish the canals for a large variety of species. Offshore, Groupers respond to live bait.

February
Winter fishing continues, with a lot of the action coming from offshore bottom fishing. Stay inshore and stalk the flats and residential canals for big Trout, Black Drum, Sheepshead, and an occasional Redfish.
March
Spring is just around the corner, and the bite in Clearwater is going to the next level. The first Tarpon begin to appear and Snook emerge from their winter hiding holes. King and Spanish Mackerel are passing by the beaches.
April
King Mackerel fishing is through the charts! Enjoy the “Spring King of the Beach” tournament, and raise funds for local charities while putting your fishing skills to the test. The Redfish bite is excellent inshore.
May
The Tarpon season begins in earnest, and most inshore Clearwater charters get completely booked up. The Snook season closes in May, but they are still great fun to catch and release. Offshore, Snapper fishing is very good.

June
Come June, Tarpon fishing is in full swing! This is the best time to catch the Silver King - if you can find a spot on the water to do so, that is. The Red Snapper season is open and Snook is spawning on the beaches, perfect for incredible catch and release fishing.
July
Clearwater's white sandy beaches are filled with vacationers, making a fishing charter a unique way to relax. Head offshore for amazing Grouper and Red Snapper fishing or venture even further out and target gorgeous Blackfin Tuna.
August
It’s hot, hot, hot on the water with some small chance of storms to ease the humidity. Offshore Bottom fishing is good, while Tarpon and Snook are still wreaking havoc inshore. Avoid the unyielding sun by booking a night fishing trip.

September
It’s finally a bit easier to breathe and with the lower water temperatures come King and Spanish Mackerel on their southwards migration. Baitfish invade the local waters with Redfish and more on their tails. Fishing is hot!
October
Fall fishing in Clearwater is top-notch, and both quantity and quality of King Mackerel attract anglers from far and wide. A little known fact is that there is still some good Tarpon fishing to be done along Clearwater Beach at this time of year.
November
Inshore, Redfish is hungry and ready to pounce your hook just as Trout begin to re-appear in the cooler waters. Head offshore to grapple with Amberjack for a good workout or target Snappers and Groupers over reefs and wrecks.
December
December is a high tourist season in Clearwater, so book your accommodation well in advance. Fishing is not to be written off – you’ll find some impressive Grouper offshore, as well as Black Drum, Redfish, and Trout inshore.
