Fishing in Rock Hall

Dubbed as the “Pearl of the Chesapeake,” Rock Hall is a quaint town with a long fishing tradition. It’s situated in the upper part of the bay, giving it access to abundant inshore fishing grounds. So whether you’re looking to catch some fish or pick up some delicious crustaceans, Rock Hall fishing charters will help you plan your ideal trip.

For most anglers, Striped Bass are the first thing that pops to mind when thinking about fishing the Chesapeake Bay. Known locally as Rockfish, these creatures are hard fighters that can grow to trophy sizes. Around these parts, the Striped Bass season opens around mid-May and runs until December, with a brief closure period around July.

Of course, many other species are swimming in the bay. Some of the fish you can come across include White Perch, Spotted Seatrout, Bluefish, Spanish Mackerel, Redfish, and more. Crabbing is another popular activity in these waters. If you’ve been craving some Maryland Blue Crab, the resident captains can show you some of their top spots and teach you how to go Crab dipping like a local.

Rock Hall features several marinas and boat ramps that captains like to use as meetup points. They’re all close to each other so you’ll have no issue getting around. Both half day and full day trips offer plenty of excitement, with full days being better suited for seasoned anglers. Most captains love having families with children on board. Just make sure to give your kid a helping hand if they accidentally hook into a trophy Rockfish!

Rules & Regulations

If you’re fishing aboard a licensed charter, you won’t need a fishing license as the captain will cover you. Individual anglers aged 16 or older will have to obtain valid Maryland fishing licenses.

Rock Hall Fishing Seasons

January

It’s the offseason in the Chesapeake Bay. However, anglers who are equipped to handle the cold can try fishing some of the tributary rivers. There, you could be hooking into some Crappie or Perch.

February

You’ll need to wait a little more to go fishing in the bay. Try finding a guide to explore some of the local rivers, and you may have some luck fishing for Catfish or Crappie.

March

As the waters are getting warmer, so is the catch and release Striped Bass action. You can also try fishing the back rivers for some Blue Catfish or Carp.

April

Spring is an amazing time to go fishing for big Rockfish! You won’t be able to keep any yet but that shouldn’t stop you from enjoying the thrill of the hunt.

May

The first two weeks of May often feature a limited trophy Rockfish season. This means you may get to keep one if regulations allow! The standard Striped Bass season starts in the second half of May.

June

The waters are teeming with White Perch, Spotted Seatrout, Redfish, and Striped Bass. This is the prime time to go fishing, so make sure you grab the opportunity.

July

The Rockfish season may be closed for a portion of July, including catch and release fishing. Check the regulations and try fishing for Spanish Mackerel, White Perch, or Bluefish instead.

August

Bass should be on the menu again! If you’d like some more variety, Spotted Seatrout, Spanish Mackerel, and Redfish should all be biting.

September

For anglers looking for some delicious panfish, White Perch is a great option this time of year. Otherwise, jump back on that Rockfish bite while the weather is still warm.

October

October? More like Rocktober! Appropriately named, this month is when Striped Bass will be going into a feeding frenzy. For anglers looking to put some fish in the freezer, now’s the time.

November

While the weather may be getting colder, the fish should still be biting. It’s the last month where anglers will be able to keep Striped Bass, so make sure to use the opportunity.

December

There should still be some Striped Bass around but it’s all catch and release fishing. As the winter sets in, try exploring some of the tributary rivers for Perch, Crappie, or Catfish.
