Fishing in St. Joseph

Known locally as “St. Joe,” this city is nestled in the southwest corner of Michigan, right along Lake Michigan’s eastern shoreline. It’s the perfect place to begin your Great Lakes adventure, as there’s a whopping variety of St. Joseph fishing charters to choose from. You’ll also be able to explore other prolific waterways, such as the Paw Paw and St. Joseph Rivers. Grab your rods and reels – it’s time to get your fish on in the Great Lake State!

If you’re visiting St. Joe, chances are you’ll end up casting a line in Lake Michigan. The season kicks off in April, when you’ll be able to hook into Chinook and Coho Salmon, Steelhead, and Brown Trout. Lake Trout, Perch, and Steelhead show up mid-summer, and the lake is bustling with all these creatures in fall.

The St. Joseph’s river is the perfect place to cast a line when you can’t get out on the lake, but it’s also an impressive fishery in its own right. You can fish here year-round for Walleye, Steelhead, Crappie, Brown Trout, Salmon varieties, and Bass. You can also head to the meeting point of the St. Joseph’s and Paw Paw Rivers, where you can try wading. Here, you can catch Smallmouth Bass, Steelhead, Salmon, and Trout.

You’ll find local fishing charters dotted all around St. Joseph, especially along the lakefront. Local guides run trips that last anywhere from four hours out on the water to a full day of angling action, so you’ll find something that perfectly suits your skill level and personal preferences!

Rules & Regulations

All anglers aged 17 and above need to purchase a Michigan fishing license before casting a line in St. Joseph. Certain species, like Trout and Salmon varieties, are subject to specific regulations, and require you to purchase a Great Lakes Salmon/Trout Stamp, too.

St. Joseph Fishing Seasons

January

If you’re eager to wet your line at the start of the year, test the waters of the St. Joe River for Walleye and Steelhead. Lake Michigan is usually still iced over!

February

You probably won’t be out on Lake Michigan during this month, depending on weather conditions, but you can try your luck fishing the river. The average temperature at this time of year is 28°F, so be sure to bundle up!

March

It’s getting busier out on the river, with Brown Trout making their entrance sometime in March. Walleye and Steelhead are still biting, and soon you’ll be able to head out on the lake.

April

Spring has sprung! This month heralds the true start of St. Joseph's fishing season. In April, you can fish Lake Michigan for Salmon (Chinook and Coho), Steelhead, and Brown Trout.

May

Come May, Lake Michigan is teeming with Salmon, Brown Trout, and now Lake Trout too. You won’t find Steelhead in the river at this time, but you can still fish for Walleye and Panfish.

June

Big Chinook Salmon and deepwater Steelhead are popular in the lake at this time. Keep an eye out for Skamania (summer-migrating Steelhead), too! They’ll be making their way from Lake Michigan into the rivers.

July

By July, you’ll be able to fish for almost anything in the lake, including King and Coho Salmon, Trout, Steelhead, and Perch. In the river you’ll catch Walleye, Steelhead, Catfish, and Bass.

August

August is one of the hottest months of the year, with an average temperature of 70°F. The fishing is on fire, too, with your choice of Steelhead, Salmon, Lake Trout, and Perch in Lake Michigan.

September

The start of fall is your last chance to get out on the lake for what’s left of the Chinook and Coho Salmon. These fish are now heading toward the rivers, where you’ll also find Steelhead and Brown Trout.

October

If you missed your chance to get out on the lake, fear not —j ust head to the St. Joe River for Salmon, Trout, Steelhead, or Walleye.

November

The weather is growing colder, with an average temperature of 40°F. But don’t let that stop you! There’s still great fishing to be had in the river for Walleye, Steelhead, and Brown Trout.

December

Even in the dead of winter, the St. Joe rRver lives up to its excellent fishing reputation. Add a little angling to your holiday plans and come catch Steelhead, Walleye, or Brown Trout.
