Fishing in St. Joseph

St. Joseph, Michigan, stands as a premier fishing destination where Lake Michigan's vast waters converge with the mighty St. Joseph River. This unique location offers year-round opportunities for anglers to target trophy species, from hard-fighting Salmon and acrobatic Steelhead to feisty Perch and elusive Walleye. The area's diverse ecosystems create world-class angling experiences, whether you're battling Chrome Kings on the open lake or pursuing Skamania Steelhead in the river's dynamic currents.

Lake Michigan charters depart directly from St. Joseph's harbor, taking advantage of the deep-water drop-offs that attract massive schools of Chinook Salmon, Coho Salmon, Lake Trout, and Steelhead. Meanwhile, the St. Joseph River—one of Lake Michigan's largest tributaries—provides sheltered fishing for migratory runs, with heated riverboats allowing comfortable winter excursions. Shore anglers find exceptional access along the North Pier, while the river's dams create natural gathering points for seasonal Salmon and Steelhead migrations.

Beyond the headline species, St. Joseph offers excellent Perch fishing near shore and Walleye opportunities in calmer stretches of the river. Professional charters provide all necessary equipment and expert guidance, tailoring trips from family-friendly nearshore outings to intense offshore battles. With its combination of big-water excitement and riverine charm, St. Joseph creates unforgettable angling adventures for every skill level in Michigan's stunning southwest corner.

January

If you’re eager to wet your line at the start of the year, test the waters of the St. Joe River for Walleye and Steelhead. Lake Michigan is usually still iced over!

February

March

It’s getting busier out on the river, with Brown Trout making their entrance sometime in March. Walleye and Steelhead are still biting, and soon you’ll be able to head out on the lake.

April
