Fishing in Cleveland

If there’s one thing the Cleveland fishing scene is known for, it’s diversity. We’re not only talking about the diversity of fish, but also about the different bodies of water you can explore. There’s a lot to do here and if you’re a freshwater enthusiast, you’re in for a treat.

Cleveland’s biggest fishing asset is, of course, Lake Erie, and this alone is enough to have you reaching for your rod. Walleye, Smallmouth Bass, and Yellow Perch are the most common and beloved catches here. Walleye are the main attraction in the city, though locals love to target Perch as well because of its great taste.

But this is just to get you started. You’ll find Rainbow Trout and its cousins Brown and Brook Trout in the Rocky River. If you’re in the mood for a bit of fun on the fast-flowing waters, Trout fishing is the way to go. You can also look forward to the solid Channel Catfish bite throughout the year. In winter, ice fishing is one of the favorite pastimes for Clevelanders.

Because fishing is so good both in and out of the city, there’s no shortage of Cleveland fishing charters at your disposal. Half day excursions are the perfect way to spend some quality time with your family and catch dinner, and there are even shared charters for this purpose. Longer, full day trips will take you into deeper waters, where trophy Walleye and Steelhead come out to play.

Metroparks, Rocky River Marina, Wallace Lake, and Edgewater Park Beach are some of the top spots to find an experienced charter guide.

Rules & Regulations

All you need to get a taste of the top-notch Cleveland fishing on offer is a valid Ohio fishing license for all anglers who are 16 and older. You can leave everything else in the hands of your trusty captain.

Cleveland Fishing Seasons

January

Mid America Boat Show is the largest indoor boat show. When you’re done with buying boat equipment, head to the Cleveland waters, where a strong Rainbow bite awaits and there are some really big fish for you to catch.

February

Join in the Brite Winter music festival for food, drink, music, and art. In February, you can experience the last hurrah of ice fishing, before the ice is all gone. Steelhead are in their element, and Panfish are also there for the taking.

March

Fair weather draws out both anglers and their prey as the waters all around the city become warmer. Steelhead are still the most targeted species, because they prefer this time of year. You can also hook into decent Walleye and Catfish.

April

If you’re in a competitive mood, join in the Barbie Rod Steelhead Derby. The Trout bite continues to wow, and Walleye, Catfish, and Bass action won’t disappoint either. The high season is upon us.

May

The whole family can fish during the Free Fishing Days without a permit, so make the most of your free time. This is a two-day event. Follow the calendar, though, because the event can be moved to June. Catch Smallmouth Bass and Walleye after dark.

June

The Great Lakes Largemouth Series starts in June and lasts through to September. Whether you’re participating or not, you can catch Smallmouth Bass (best in the evening), Channel Catfish, and of course, the hard-fighting Walleye.

July

Have a great time at the annual Family Fishing Day at the Rockefeller Park Lagoon. Species that are biting include Smallmouth Bass, Walleye, Yellow Perch, Panfish, Channel Catfish, and Carp. It’s a great way to spend a beautiful summer day.

August

Bass, Walleye, Yellow Perch, Panfish, Channel Catfish, and Carp are all there for the taking in the late summer. Fish early in the morning or late in the evening for best results. When you’ve had your share of action, enjoy the annual Burning River Festival.

September

The beginning of fall marks the return of Rainbow Trout, as well as bigger numbers of Yellow Perch that locals look forward to. With Cleveland fishing charters, you can go after Smallmouth Bass, Carp, Panfish, and Channel Catfish.

October

In the rivers surrounding Cleveland, you’ll find excellent Steelhead, while Lake Erie boasts superb Bass, Perch, and Walleye specimens. Inland, Largemouth Bass and Channel Catfish will give you a good fight.

November

Even though the high season is behind us, this is one of the best times to chase Yellow Perch and land dozens of these delectable fish on one trip. The Steelhead bite is picking up and takes center stage in November.

December

Big Steelhead are the main fishing attraction in Cleveland in December, both because there’s a lot of them and they can be very big. The temperature drops bring out the joys of ice fishing for Perch and Panfish, so there’s something for everyone.
