Fishing in Austin

The capital of Texas boasts excellent freshwater fisheries and even better guides. Local Austin fishing charter operators grew up conquering the Colorado River, its reservoirs, and nearby lakes. They specialize in knowing these waters, the fish, and hotspots like the back of their hands. So, team up with one of many licensed guides from the area and experience what Austin has to offer.

Speaking of the offer, Austin doesn't lack any renowned species. The most commonly caught fish are Largemouth Bass, Smallmouth Bass, Striped and Hybrid Bass, Blue, Channel, and Flathead Catfish, and Crappie. It's not uncommon to cross paths with Longnose and Spotted Gar either. But make no mistake, Largemouth Bass are the catch around here.

Angling is a year-round activity in Austin. Some seasons, however, are more productive than others. Spring and fall are undoubtedly the most prolific times of the year to go after trophy catches. Austin has more than 300 days of sunshine, so the weather is rarely an issue unless it's too hot. So, if you want to fish during summer, try casting at dawn or dusk to avoid the heat.

You'll have plenty of fishing locations at your disposal. You can explore the reservoirs in the very center of the city, such as Lake Austin and Lady Bird Lake, or wet your line in nearby Lake Travis or Lake Bastrop. Based on your preferences, you can book anything from a 3-hour trip to an extended 12-hour adventure. But one thing is certain – Austin fishing charters will show you what angling here is all about!

Rules & Regulations

Before you hop on a boat and head to where the fish abide, you'll have to buy a valid fishing license. Along with the license, you'll need to obtain an endorsement, too. Once you take care of the permits, you’ll also need to pay attention to size and bag limits. Not everything you catch is up for grabs. Make sure you're familiar with the latest rules and regulations surrounding your hunt.

Austin Fishing Seasons

January

Something you might not know is that there’s a statue of Stevie Ray Vaughan on Lady Bird Lake. Believe it or not, the statue is one of the more popular places for fishing, especially in winter.

February

Fishing Austin in February is decent as long as you’re able to go into deeper waters on a boat or kayak. Bank fishing simply will not do, whatever you might be after.

March

Expect much better fishing conditions when the winter finally breaks. March can get pretty windy, but that shouldn’t get in the way of good fishing around here!

April

The spring fishing season is heating up in Austin and there’s hardly a better time to catch your fair share of Bass. Get ready to see the full potential of fishing with a Texas rig.

May

Pretty much any lake on the Colorado River will have you hooking up dozens of Bass on a good day. The bite slows down when the sun is high, but you can still get plenty of work done even then.

June

Early June is a great time to be targeting schooling White Bass near creek mouths. If you see birds going crazy over bait fish, get ready for some intense angling!

July

As summer starts getting more and more intense, getting a consistent Bass bite becomes harder by the week. This is one of those times when experienced guides are worth their weight in gold.

August

With the water temperatures in the upper-eighties, you can expect Bass to run as deep as they can. This means fishing from the banks is usually a bad idea.

September

Night fishing is a popular way to catch fish in the first half of September. As summer’s chokehold starts to recede, you’ll have an easier time of fishing the local lakes.

October

Austin in fall is home to top-notch Bass action. October tends to be an especially good time for schools of Bass to come closer to the surface.

November

The first half of November usually has Bass schooling in shallow waters, so stock up on some fast-moving artificials. During the second half of the month, you should make the switch to jigging spoons.

December

Night fishing near lighted docks is something worth considering this time of year because the results might surprise you! As long as you don’t mind the cold, that is.

As you'd expect, it's quite hot in the summer. But we had a great time and the heat didn't really bother us.

Captain Matthew was truly fantastic. The boat and gear were comprehensive, he knew right where the fish were biting, and we were reeling in dinner in the first hour. Excellent communication, happy to share his knowledge, and patient with me and the teenagers. Excellent and highly recommended for all skill levels, including beginners!

Captain Randall was extremely helpful from scheduling to end of trip. We had a wonderful time highly recommend him. He is very knowledgeable and helpful teaching how to fish. The trip was scheduled as a gift for our nephew who loves to fish. We are not experienced. Captain Randall had enormous patience and would cast my line for me too. My nephew is experienced and said that he had a great time and would use him if he is back in area.

We had a wonderful time with Captain Randal this morning. He is extremely knowledgeable and passionate about what he does. Just before our trip, he mentioned he scuba dived in the lake to find some new fishing spots! Thatโ€™s just one example of his desire to put his clients on fish. We had a great time and would highly recommend him.

Had a great day with Matthew! He was a great guide and me and my fiancรฉ will DEFINITELY be booking another trip with him and learned so much. We had a pretty slow morning but Matthew taught us so many different techniques and was extremely informative. It really started picking up towards the end and we started pulling out fish after fish. Matthew definitely knows what heโ€™s talking about and knows how to get those fish in the boat!

Kevin was perfect. Made sure the dropoff/pickup locations were clearly understand and showed up early, waited for us and was prepared. Being a clueless and casual angler, he satisfied my curiosities regarding what our techniques were and had some good conversations about the surrounding areas. He's also a magician. First cast, first fish, only fish. I'll never believe that he didn't plant it in the water and "reel" it in so we got some action. Nice guy. Highly rated.

What a great morning of fishing with Randal. His communication from the start of the booking through the day of fishing was top notch. We loved the opportunity to try our hand at different lures. Randal was very knowledgable and made sure we knew how to use each of them. The bass were plentiful and the time we spent on Lake Travis was memorable. Thank you for such a great day!

Took my girl out on a fishing trip with Derek. We didnโ€™t know much about fishing. We arrived at the dock and Derek took us out to the hot spots. Slow at first but Derek quick changed up the lures and relocated us. We couldnโ€™t keep up with the fish. We even extended for another hour and caught 2 large cats. DeeZ the Man!!!
