Fishing in Big Pine Key

With the waters of the Gulf kissing the shores on one side, and the wilderness of the Atlantic on the other, it’s easy to see what makes the Keys unique. And fishing in Big Pine Key is no exception. Small and beautiful, this little town will give you the best of both worlds – a relaxing day and exciting fishing!

You can fish for just about anything in these waters. Inshore you’ll see Tarpon, Bonefish, Permit, Redfish, Speckled Trout, and Pompano – to name a few. There’s also big Snapper and Grouper lurking in the reefs, waiting to take your bait. Head a bit further offshore, and you’ll be rewarded with trophy Sailfish, Mahi Mahi, Wahoo, Tuna, and of course, Marlin.

If you’re looking for an introduction to the area, or just want to take your family out for a day of fun, a half day inshore trip is a great choice. However, if you want to test the waters for some big pelagics, think about booking a full day or an extended full day trip as you’ll need more time to get to the fishing grounds.

There are fishing charters everywhere you look in Big Pine Island! Really, it’s a small town surrounded by water, so just head to the nearest waterway, and chances are there’s a charter waiting there. Just choose between the Gulf and the Atlantic and head over to that side of the island.

Rules & Regulations

Hop aboard a Big Pine Key fishing charter, and you won’t have to worry about fishing licenses, as you’ll be covered by the captain. There are regulations when it comes to certain fish species, so book your trip with a reputable captain who’ll keep you in the loop and make sure you’re fishing within the law.

Big Pine Key Fishing Seasons

January

Trout seem to never let an angler down around Florida. You can also get Snook around the inshore shallows. Offshore waters can reward you with Tuna, Mackerel, Sailfish, and Swordfish.

February

Now you have a solid offer of Trout, Permit, some Reds, and Snook inshore. Further out, you can get Mangrove Snapper, Wahoo, Yellowfin Tuna, Yellowtail Snapper, and Bills.

March

Tarpon time is upon us. Head to the flats to get them. Bonefish are also on the chew. Pre-spawning Permit are feisty. Also, Redfish are strong and can be massive. Inshore is the place to be.

April

The weather’s improving and fishing’s getting better. You can get Bonefish inshore, as well as Permit and Jack Crevalle, while offshore there are Amberjack, Sailfish, Swordfish, and other big catches.

May

Mangrove Snapper is available, but you can also get bags full of Permit, Bonefish, and Cobia. Out there, Mahi Mahi, Swordfish, Kingfish, Yellowfin Tuna, and Wahoo are rising in numbers.

June

Tarpon are biting like crazy. Hire a boat and head out to the bridges and flats to make your day even better. Offshore waters boast Amberjack, Billfish, Mahi Mahi, Tuna, Wahoo, and you can get Grouper around reefs.

July

The hot fishing action continues. If you look inshore, you can still get Tarpon, Permit, and some Cobia. Offshore, the fish are biting heavily. Some Sailfish, many Swordfish, Tuna, and Wahoo are yours to claim.

August

The summer break is still on, and the fishing is on par with the heat. Go on an offshore trip and get yourself strong Amberjack, Wahoo, Mahi Mahi, some Tuna, and more.

September

Kids go back to school, but the fish are going nowhere. In inshore waterways you can catch Permit, Reds, Trout, Bonefish, whereas an offshore trip can get you a Marlin, an occasional Tuna, Wahoo, and some other members of the Bill family.

October

As the heat drops, Snook rise in number, here to stay until February. The offshore waters remain productive and you can get some Kings, Tuna, Wahoo, and Swordfish. Head to the reefs for some Grouper and Snapper.

November

Kids like Lemon and Blacktip Shark and this is a good time to get them. Cobia are in solid numbers, as are Trout and Snook. Offshore, Tuna numbers are improving.

December

Barracuda are in their prime time. Go and get them. Don’t miss out on Wahoo. They are now as strong as ever and put up an excellent fight. Big Pine Swordfish are still there, ready for some rod-bending action.
