Fishing in Kenai Peninsula

For anglers looking to hook Salmon, few things can compare to a Kenai Peninsula fishing adventure. Located south of Anchorage, it’s surrounded by productive fishing grounds including the Kenai and Kasilof Rivers. Lovers of the outdoors won’t want to miss out on the opportunity to fish in this natural paradise!

The Kenai Peninsula offers the most diverse sportfishing in Alaska. It’s home to all five species of Pacific Salmon and boasts a world-record-holding King (Chinook) Salmon fishery. That’s not all either, you’ll also hook into massive Rainbow Trout, Dolly Varden, Halibut, and Lingcod. If you’re looking for more, try your hand at clamming – a great activity for youngsters.

For a more relaxed option, head to the Kasilof River. This drift-only fishing haven is home to massive Steelhead. It also restricts access to motorized boats, making for incredible fly fishing opportunities. For Halibut and Lingcod, the Cook Inlet and Resurrection Bay provide some of the best conditions in the world.

The best part about fishing the Kenai Peninsula is the variety of trips on offer. For serious Salmon action, the Kenai River and remote fly-in lakes call. If you have the time for a full day trip or, better yet, a multi-day trip, go for it!

This is Alaska’s most popular fishing spot, especially in summertime. Whether you’re heading out of Kenai, Soldotna, or Seward, hotels and campgrounds fill up fast. Be sure to book a charter and find lodging well in advance to avoid disappointment.

Rules & Regulations

While some charters include fishing licenses, most don't. In that case, you'll need to buy your own freshwater and saltwater license before hopping aboard. If you’re going after the Kenai River’s most popular resident, you’ll also need to get an extra King Salmon stamp. Possession and bagging limits in these waters can get tricky, so it’s best to head out with an experienced guide.

Kenai Peninsula Fishing Seasons

January

It’s too cold to do any productive fishing, but there’s still plenty to do in this winter wonderland! Visit the Turnagain Pass to soak in the stunning scenery and take part in unlimited winter activities.

February

Some Rainbow Trout and Dolly Varden show up in the Kenai River, but most boats are still out of the water. Head to Soldotna instead and take part in the Frozen RiverFest. There’s food, games, and fun for all!

March

The weather finally starts to warm up and there may even be a few boats in the water. Head out with a brave captain in search of local Alaskan Flounder and Pollock, and you may even hook into some Halibut.

April

The moment we’ve all been waiting for has finally arrived – spring! Start testing your angling skills against Dolly Varden and Rainbow Trout in preparation for the kick-off to Salmon season next month.

May

Boats fill up and anglers from all over start to trickle in for the spring run. Things really get going mid-month when King Salmon arrives! ‘Til then, hook into Rainbow Trout, Grayling, and Chum Salmon.

June

King Salmon fishing is in full swing and everyone is out there making the most of it. Red (Sockeye) Salmon come through for their first run, making this an especially productive time for fishing the Kenai River!

July

The Lower Kenai is packed with anglers going after King and Red Salmon, but you won’t miss out if you head elsewhere. Saltwater Salmon, Halibut, Lingcod, and Rockfish deliver across the board.

August

Silver (Coho) Salmon outnumber the Kings, but it’s a time where you can hook into all five varieties of Salmon across the Peninsula. If you’re a tournament angler, check out the Kenai River Classic.

September

As we start to say goodbye to the Salmon population, we welcome another run of Dolly Varden and Rainbow Trout in the Kenai and Kasilof Rivers! In saltier waters, Halibut, Lingcod, and Rockfish deliver.

October

It’s your last chance to get out on the water, as most captains close up shop by the end of the month. Fly fishermen and light tackle enthusiasts will want to get out for great Rainbow Trout and Dolly Varden fishing!

November

There’s a noticeable chill in the air now, but you can still do some Rainbow Trout and Dolly Varden fishing, if you can find a willing captain. Alternatively, head out on your own for some wintery solitude.

December

There’s no lack of Christmas cheer on the Kenai Peninsula and the locals love to throw a party. Check out one of the many festivals and craft shows to bring out your inner child!
