Fishing in Lake Erie - Canada
Lake Erie may be the smallest of the Great Lakes when it comes to volume, but the angling opportunities it provides are seriously huge. Looking to explore its fish-filled northern waters? With a plethora of Lake Erie fishing charters on offer, Canada is the perfect place to start your adventure!
The entirety of this freshwater fishery is packed full of some prized species, with the majority of them inhabiting its Canadian waters. Smallmouth Bass, Walleye, Perch, and a side of Steelhead – what’s not to love? You’ll also occasionally come across Musky and Panfish species, and something is always biting year-round. If you can brave those cold Canadian winters, you’ll be rewarded!
The most common way to fish here is drift fishing alongside a local captain. It’s a real “back to basics” way of casting a line that truly contributes to the magic of fishing this Great Lake! Visit in winter, and ice fishing may be on the cards, too. Trips generally run anywhere from 5–10 hours. New anglers can get a great introduction to the lake on a shorter trip, whereas a longer trip allows for more time to reach the lake’s deepest spots.
You’ll find charters captains dotted all along the Ontario side of Lake Erie, but some spots in particular stand out. Just south of Niagara Falls, you’ll find departure points such as Port Erie, Crystal Beach, and Port Colbourne. Head to the northwestern side, and you’ll find Leamington and Port Talbot. And there’s a whole host of locations in between, too.
If you’re over the age of 18, you’ll need to purchase a valid fishing license to cast a line on Lake Erie, even if you’re fishing alongside a local charter. You’ll need an Outdoors Card, too. Luckily, it’s a simple process, and you can purchase both of these online.
