Fishing in Banana River

Launching right out of Florida’s Space Coast, it’s fair to say that a Banana River fishing experience is out of this world! This 31-mile-long lagoon is home to a whole host of world-famous fish. Come cast your line and discover this unique fishery for yourself!

If there’s one word to describe Banana River’s fishery, it’s “diverse.” Connected to the Indian River, this lagoon is made up of salt marshes, swamps, and tidal flats. This means you’ll get to encounter Floridian favorites such as Redfish, Speckled Trout, Snook, Ladyfish, Tarpon, Black Drum, and Jack Crevalle, all in one place.

Thanks to the river’s flat waters, you can cast your line for a variety of fish just minutes after departure. Banana River charters usually offer trips in four-, six-, and eight-hour chunks. Longer trips are an excellent option if you want to spend more time exploring these waters, or target a specific species like the mighty “Silver King” (Tarpon). If you or your kids are new to angling, a shorter trip is plenty of time for you to get acquainted with this fishery.

When it comes to picking the perfect departure point for your adventure, there are a few locations that stand out. Cape Canaveral offers up a huge variety of charters suited to anglers of all skill levels, and there’s plenty of on-land action, too. Merritt Island is home to some of the area’s most stunning flora and fauna. Cocoa Beach provides direct access to the lagoon’s most “fishable” spots – as well as the Kennedy Space Center!

Rules & Regulations

When fishing alongside a licensed Banana River charter operator, you don’t need to worry about purchasing a fishing license, as this will be covered for you. Your fishing gear will be included, too. Species such as Tarpon have strict catch-and-release regulations in this area, and your captain will be able to advise you more on this.

Banana River Fishing Seasons

January
Start your year off with some top-quality fishing action! At the northern end of the Banana River, the Black Drum bite is especially hot. Redfish and Speckled Trout can also be found in the deeper “potholes” of the lagoon.

February

In February, the hottest bite comes from Black Drum, Redfish, and Speckled Trout! Start your day fishing the deeper sections of the flats, before moving to the shallowest parts of the river.

March

Spring has sprung, and with it comes a whole host of fish. Head to the lagoon’s flats during morning for the chance to hook Redfish and Speckled Trout. You can battle the first few feisty Jack Crevalle, too.

April

This is often considered one of the best times to fish the Space Coast, and Banana River is no exception! The Speckled Trout bite is hot throughout the lagoon, with many trophy-sized varieties to be found.

May

The weather is really heating up now, and the fishing more than matches it. The river’s early morning Trout bite is something that shouldn’t be missed, and you’ll also find some huge Bull Reds cruising the flats.

June

Why not celebrate the start of summer vacation by taking your family on a day of top fishing action? The early morning and late evening Trout bite is spectacular, and the first hard-fighting Snook are starting to arrive.

July

The fishing remains as hot as the weather, and live bait fishing fanatics in particular will love casting a line during July. This type of fishing will see you coming up against Speckled Trout, Snook, and the "Silver King."

August

When it comes to experiencing August’s best fishing action, follow the phrase “The early bird catches the worm”! Head out as the sun rises to target Trout, Snook, and Tarpon, among others. You’ll beat the heat, too!

September

As the temperature starts to drop slightly, Speckled Trout head towards the shallowest flats, which makes for some great topwater fishing action. Redfish can be found circling the edges of the flats, too.

October

October means the fall mullet run! This bait fish can be found swarming the river, closely followed by Snook, Redfish, and Speckled Trout. Head out for a spooky Snook nighttime adventure – it’s Halloween month, after all!

November

The temperature is dropping but a Florida winter is still plenty warm, especially for out-of-towners! As the waters cool, Speckled Trout, Redfish, and Black Drum can be found, searching the shallows for an easy meal.

December

It may be winter, but the bite on Banana River is still hot, with Redfish and Black Drum all roaming these waters. Come hook yourself some tasty table fare – December is all about overindulging, after all!
