Fishing in Kauai

Out of all Hawaii’s islands, Kauai is the most fascinating. Lush forests, sandy white beaches, dramatic mountains, tropical climate, and vibrant wildlife – the "Garden Isle" has it all. Fishing, however, is what truly captivates the hearts of all passionate anglers. And Kauai fishing charters will make sure you experience the full potential of both freshwater and saltwater opportunities.

Fishing in Kauai is a year-round adventure. Inland fisheries will treat you with the picture-perfect Peacock Bass. Inshore fishing will reward you with peculiar species like Needlefish, Parrotfish, Butterflyfish, and Triggerfish. Meanwhile, a group of species known as the "Deep 7" will spice up your reef fishing trip. Finally, ocean monsters like Billfish and Tuna will make your day offshore.

Depending on whether you'll be exploring the reservoirs or heading offshore, you'll need different trips, fishing techniques, and equipment. If you're going after Bass, a 4 hour trip is perfect. If you'd rather test your skills against Billfish, we recommend a full day voyage. The easiest way to ensure you're on the right track is to hire a local guide to show you around.

You can find top-notch Kauai fishing charters anywhere from Princeville to Waimea. However, some corners are more famous for their angling offer than others. Lihue is known for its Nawiliwili Harbor and bluewater fishing, while Wailua is home to the magnificent Wailua Reservoir and inland opportunities. Long story short, there's something for everyone!

Rules & Regulations
The good news is that you don't need a marine recreational fishing license to cast your line in the deep blue. However, if you plan to explore the inland waters you have to purchase a freshwater fishing license. There are also bag and size restrictions, so make sure you're on top of the regulations before hitting Kauai’s fisheries.

Kauai Fishing Seasons

January

The Billfish action may be slow in January, but Bigeye Tuna are around in force. The winter is also a great time to hit the deep-water reefs in search of Snapper, Grouper, and Jobfish.

February

Waimea Town Celebration is the oldest festival on the island, bringing together locals and tourists to enjoy a day of music and dancing. Check it out then head offshore in search of tasty Ahi.

March

Striped Marlin attack baits by the dozen in March, joined by Wahoo, Mahi Mahi, Bigeye Tuna, and Shortbill Spearfish. You can also enjoy the best Trout fishing Kauai sees all year long.

April

April is usually your last chance to bag the “Deep 7” before their summer closure. Heading offshore bags you even bigger hauls, with Bigeye Tuna, Wahoo, and Mahi Mahi crowding the FADs.

May

Blue Marlin finally show up offshore, kicking off a summer of huge hits and heavy tackle hookups. There are still plenty of Striped Marlin and Spearfish, bring a Billfish Slam within reach!

June

Kauai may not have the packed tournament season you’ll find on Big Island or Oahu, but that just means more open water for you to enjoy! Target monster Blue Marlin in the summer sun.

July

The Koloa Plantation Days Celebration brings Old Koloa Town alive with people, music, dancing, and delicious food in a celebration of the town’s multicultural heritage each July.

August

Both Yellowfin and Skipjack Tuna are around in droves throughout August. They make for some delicious poke, or the perfect bait for monster Blue Marlin. Some things taste good to everyone.

September

The Kauai Mokihana Festival kicks off in September with hula competitions, live music, cultural events, and more. Trevally are at their best in September, making for huge inshore hookups.

October

Dancers travel from across the globe for the three-day Eo E Emalani I Alakai Festival. This event takes place every October in the stunning Kokee State Park and is well worth a visit.

November

Forget turkey, you could be feasting on Bigeye Tuna, Hawaiian Grouper, Pink Snapper, and more. Head out in search of some huge fish and enjoy the freshest Thanksgiving dinner ever.

December

With overnight temperatures barely dropping below 70, Kauai is the perfect place to escape the cold and enjoy Christmas on the beach. Sun, sand, and sea sure top our list for Santa this year.
