Fishing in San Diego Bay

One of the biggest natural harbors on the west coast of the United States, the stunning San Diego Bay has a rich history, as well as amazing natural resources. With pleasant weather throughout the year, and a large variety of fish you can go after, a San Diego Bay fishing adventure is something you need to experience to believe. It promises a trip that’s sure to stay in your memory for a long time.

The sheer size of San Diego Bay means there’s a lot to explore. And there are so many species of fish that call these waters home that you’ll find going after them a joy. The inshore waters are brimming with Calico and Sand Bass, Rockfish, Halibut, and White Seabass. Yellowtail Amberjack, Tuna, Marlin, and Mahi Mahi are all in the cards offshore.

When it comes to choosing the right trip, you’ll find a variety of options on offer here. Looking for an inshore family adventure? Go with a half day trip and get familiar with the area while making some great memories. If you’re up for a bigger challenge, consider booking a full day or an extended full day trip and go battle some offshore monsters.

Where can you find a charter? Well, you’ll find them dotted around the bay, just head down to the water. The city of San Diego offers up a large number of vessels you can board, as well as the smaller towns of Chula Vista and National City.

Rules & Regulations

When it comes to fishing regulations, you’ll need to get a California fishing license. Everyone over the age of 16 needs one, regardless of whether you’re heading out with a charter or on your own. A lot of species are heavily regulated in California, so going out with a reputable captain is the best way to ensure you’re fishing within the law.

San Diego Bay Fishing Seasons

January

This is the coldest month of the year, and it’s all about Sculpin, Bass, and Halibut. You’ll find that a January adventure is just as fun as a summer one, just less crowded.

February

February can get pretty windy, and the waters can get choppy. When conditions are good, however, fishing for Sand Bass, Halibut, and Yellowtail is very good.

March

The weather slowly gets better in March, so it’s a great time to head out and explore the flats. You’ll get the chance to hook into Sand Bass and Halibut, as well as prized Calico Bass.

April

Fishing for Sand Bass is all the rage in April, with temperatures getting higher during spring. If you’re looking for more action, Calico Bass, White Seabass, and Yellowtail are biting hot.

May

The fishing starts really heating up as summer slowly approaches, with Bass biting inshore. Head out to the deeper waters and you’ll be targeting Bigeye and Bluefin Tuna, as well as Pacific Albacore.

June

The high season is here, and the fishing gets hot. There are charters running daily trips to the offshore waters if you’re looking to target Tuna, Albacore, Yellowtail, or Mahi Mahi.

July

With the nice weather and higher temperatures, going fishing in San Diego Bay in summer is a real joy. You can head out and target those big game fish like Tuna, Mahi Mahi, and Yellowtail.

August

As the waters become warm, a variety of fish species come flocking to the waters around San Diego Bay. Mahi Mahi and Yellowtail can still be caught offshore, as well as prized Albacore.

September

Fall brings with it a variety of fishing opportunities in the bay. Halibut and Rockfish are back in the cards, with Marlin, Tuna, and Albacore being caught close to shore when the waters are warm.

October

There’s one species to go after in October, and it’s trophy Yellowtail! This is the best time of the year to go after this mighty creature. Closer to shore, you’ll find Rockfish and Halibut.

November

While those fish that prefer warmer waters have already left by now, there’s still a variety of species you can go after. In November, you’ll get the chance to target Yellowtail, Rockfish, and Halibut.

December

If you’re looking for an action-packed adventure, most charter boats run long-range trips in December. Closer to shore, you’ll still get to go after Rockfish, Halibut, and Calico Bass.
