Fishing in Sandusky Bay

Sandusky Bay is one of Ohio’s hidden gems that has a lot to give to all levels of anglers. Even though it’s sometimes overlooked in favor of the legendary Lake Erie, which is just around the corner, the Sandusky Bay fishing opportunities are ample. Locals are in the know about these productive fishing grounds, and more visiting anglers discover it every year.

The bay is nestled at the mouth of Sandusky River and, in its waters, you’ll find a good variety of fish that would make every freshwater enthusiast happy. Catfish is one of the most commonly caught species, and there are specimens in the bay that can weigh well over 10 pounds.

The Largemouth Bass action is very good and there’s a lot of them to catch because the area is still underfished. Not only are Largies abundant, but they can also get quite plump, which is always good news. Smallmouth Bass, Yellow Perch, and Walleye are on the to-catch list as well, especially if you move to the east side of the bay, towards Lake Erie.

Because one of the Great Lakes is a stone’s throw away, local fishing guides regularly offer combo trips, where you can explore both the bay and the lake. Bear in mind that when you pick a shorter excursion, you’ll probably stay in the bay the whole time. Full day options will take you past Cedar Point, and into the Western Basin of Lake Erie, where hard-fighting Walleye await.

Sandusky Bay is surrounded by well-known fishing destinations such as Port Clinton, Lakeside Marblehead, and the city of Sandusky. Wherever you’re staying, you can find a local captain that will help you explore the bay’s fishing potential.

Rules & Regulations

The most important item you’ll need for the fishing trip is a valid Ohio fishing license – your guide is in charge of everything else.

Sandusky Bay Fishing Seasons

January

Winters are no joke in Ohio, but even under the ice, fish are still active. This means only one thing – ice fishing. If the weather conditions align and the ice is thick enough, head out for some Perch fishing, it will make for a fun day.

February

Temperatures are slowly rising, so if you’re going out on the ice, be very careful. The bite is, naturally, slower than in the summer months, but there’s some Walleye and Perch in the eastern part of the bay and the Western Basin of Lake Erie.

March

You can feel spring in the air, so fish are a-coming! Walleye are getting ready for their spawning season, so you can target them in the shallow waters closer to shore, and there’s a fair amount of Bass for you to chase as well.

April

In April, more and more charters are opening for business every day, as the peak season is around the corner and all the favorites come out to play. Catfish, Bass, Walleye, and Perch are out there for the taking, and the best part – this is just the beginning!

May

Water temperatures are rising, and fishing in Sandusky Bay is very good in May. The Walleye action is excellent this time of year, Catfish are congregating around bridges, and Perch are practically everywhere.

June

Whatever technique you choose these days, chances are you’ll come back to shore with a full cooler. Head to the east side of the bay to chase Walleye or, if you’re out with the kids, focus on Catfish around rocks and pilings, along with Largemouth Bass.

July

Whether it’s Bass or Yellow Perch, Walleye or big Channel Catfish you’re after, Sandusky Bay will provide! Largies are particularly active, and you can hook them by the dozens, so get ready. If you’re up for the ultimate challenge, big Lake Erie Walleye await.

August

Fishing for pretty much all species is going strong in August. Remember that your prey will head to the deeper waters and this is where you should go to catch ‘em all. This is as good a month as any to land your next Catfish trophy.

September

Whether it’s the size or the number of the fish you’re after, you won’t be disappointed in September. You can troll, bottom fish, or drift fish for Walleye, Bass, and Catfish. Or just catch a bit of everything, either way, it’s a lot of fun.

October

The fall is in full swing, so the fishing is slowing down, but there’s still time for a productive day of fishing in Sandusky Bay. Chunky Walleye and Yellow Perch are always hungry, and Bass action is still solid, so make the most of it.

November

The open water fishing season is over for the next several months, so it’s time to enjoy the holidays and avoid the cold, at least until the temperatures drop enough to create good ice fishing conditions. On mild days, you can target Perch from shore.

December

It’s freezing out there, so you can’t expect fish to be jumping around. The bay is quiet, but if it’s cold enough, why not head east and go ice fishing on Lake Erie? Both the Walleye and Perch bite are on and will keep you busy.
