Calneva Fishing Guide Services and Big Water Boating โ€“ Las Vegas received great reviews from families who booked fishing trips in Nevada.

The most popular fish species you can target are Striped Bass, Rainbow Trout (Steelhead), and Largemouth Bass. Top fishing techniques include Light Tackle, Jigging, and Trolling. Lake fishing, river fishing, and flats fishing are commonly offered by local guides.

The Silver State is also known for being “the driest state in the country,” so you might think that fishing here is nothing to be talked about. Think again! Despite its reputation, the Nevada fishing scene is a haven for West Coast freshwater anglers. With hundreds of lakes, rivers, reservoirs, and streams, Nevada is a beloved and popular fishing destination.

So what can you target? Well, all the freshwater superstars are here – Trout being the most popular catch of all. Whether it’s Brown, Lake (Mackinaw), or Rainbow, you'll have plenty to choose from.

Cutthroat Trout is the state fish and one of the most-prized catches, especially on Pyramid Lake. Anglers who want more variety can go after Kokanee Salmon (aka inland Sockeye). There are a lot of fisheries that offer solid Bass fishing, with Striped and Black Bass at the top of the catch list. Catfish, Crappie, Perch, and Sunfish are also in the cards.

One of the best things first-time anglers can do is decide which body of water to fish and then find a guide to take you out. Several lakes are in high-demand among fishermen, and local captains will know exactly where to take you. Half day trips are the best choice for getting a feel of the water, and some charters even offer fishing and camping combos for outdoor enthusiasts.

Not sure where to start? The top locations to find a charter are Boulder City, Reno, and Glenbrook.

Rules & Regulations

In the state of Nevada, every person over the age of 12 is required to have a valid Nevada fishing license. Bear in mind that some of the waterways are on the border of two states, so make sure to check regulations and get the right permits.

January

If you’re craving some fishing action in January, going after Stripers could be very productive. Lake Mead and Mohave are the best spots. Want to try some ice fishing? Your best bet is Eagle Valley Reservoir.

February

There’s a lot happening on Lake Mohave. Trout fishing is more than solid, and there’s plenty of Bass swimming around as well. There are a lot of fly fishermen targeting Trout on the Truckee River.

March
As March rolls in, you don’t have to leave the Las Vegas area to enjoy good fishing. The local urban ponds have good amounts of Trout, Bass, and Catfish – more than enough to keep you busy.
April
Spring on Lake Mead means a lot of Striped Bass and Bluegill. On Lake Mohave, you can expect good amounts of Bass and Catfish, while Lake Tahoe is packing top-notch Mackinaw.
May
There’s plenty of Lake Trout in Lake Tahoe, and Truckee River is practically crawling with eager fly fishermen, looking for their next trophy Trout. Lake Mead holds some top-notch Bass that happen to be very hungry.
June
It’s Kokanee time on Lake Tahoe, and if you’re after a mixed bag, you can chase Mackinaw around the lake. On Lake Mohave, Bass fishing is improving with each day, and Lake Mead is a catfishing paradise.
July
It’s getting hot out there, so the best time to go fishing is early in the morning and around dusk. Striped Bass fishing on Lake Mead is very good, and Lake Mohave offers superb Bass and Catfish bite.
August
Go to Truckee River for some unforgettable fly fishing Trout battles, or head to Tahoe for a mix Kokanee and Trout. If you’re in the mood for Bass, then Lake Mohave is your destination.
September
If you’ve never caught a Mackinaw before, this could be your chance to visit Lake Tahoe and land one. There’s plenty of Catfish and Bass in Mohave Lake, and Mead boasts first-class Striper fishing.
October
As the waters are becoming colder on Lake Mohave, more and more Trout come out to play. If you want to go after Bass on Lake Mead, go out in October and make it your last Bass hurrah before winter.
November
If the weather serves you, you’ll be able to target some trophy Rainbow Trout on the Truckee River. If you find yourself on Lake Mead, hit the water at sunrise, and you’ve got a good chance of landing good Striped Bass.
December
Stay in Las Vegas if you don’t feel like facing the cold on the lakes, there’s plenty of Catfish and Rainbow Trout to target in the urban ponds. While you’re there, why not celebrate the New Year in Vegas? It’s a win-win combo!

We had an Amazing trip. The fish were not biting like we wish they could have been, but itโ€™s fishing right! Nice boat, gear, and our Captain was very knowledgeable about the fish and the area. I would highly recommend going with โ€œHooked on Stripersโ€ He has a lot of other packages to offer as well. Check him out when you get a chance!!
