Going after these giants of the deep is as exciting as it gets and reeling them in will require a lot of skill and strength. Which is why, of course, so many anglers love Sturgeon fishing.
These magnificent, ancient fish can grow to be up to 7 feet long and weigh well over 300 pounds. Imagine the sight of something that colossal dragging your line and mercilessly fighting you every step of the way. Sturgeon always stick to the bottom in search of food, so to hook your next record, you need your bait to be on the bottom as well. Anchovies and mud shrimp will do the trick.
You can fish for White Sturgeon in the Bay Area year round, as long as you know where they gather at the time of your trip. Bear in mind that Sturgeon fishing in specific sections of the Bay is off limits at certain times. If you’re not certain where to cast your line, book a trip with an experienced charter captain. They will know where the fish congregate, where you’re allowed to target them, and how to get them to bite. Flats close to China Camp, the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta, and Antioch Bridge are some of the best hot spots in the area.
It’s important to note that Sturgeon fishing is strictly regulated, and that different areas have different fishing seasons. Your guide will tell you everything you need to know before you head out.
Before your Sturgeon hunt begins, remember to buy a California fishing license with a Sturgeon Fishing Report Card. You’re allowed to keep one Sturgeon, as long as it’s between 40–60 inches long. Stock up on food and drinks, and you’re ready for first-class Sturgeon fishing in the Bay Area!

We went out when the tides were making it very challenging to catch halibut. Other boats we were hearing had zero catches for the day but Captain Justin and Joe were able to still get us MANY catches - each person left with 2 above average size halibut.

We werenโt able to catch any fish from the dock on Bethel Island where we were staying but much of that was limited by stormy weather. On a bass charter we were able to catch 1 largemouth bass and 1 striped bass. In February fishing is OK but not as good as spring and summer.
