This week, we have been getting the first few rains of the season. This means nutrient-rich waters from the warmer South Pacific will attract microorganisms, which will then attract the upper stages of the food chain, in other words, bigger fish. Pelagics like tuna, mahi, sailfish, and Marlin will be our predominant bites until November. This day, as we were passing the deepest waters on the way to the Pearl Islands, with an average of 200 feet deep waters, we encountered huge bait balls full of diving birds, which gave us the first indicator of fish around while deciding where to throw lines we spotted some dolphins. There's something that we can tell with dolphins: tuna. We started shifting our lures to cedar blocks on our trolling lines and had our spinning lines with poppers ready to cast them. Whenever we got a bite on the trolling Lines, we immediately cast those poppers and maximized tuna bites. Welcome to Panama game fishing mecca! What makes fishing so good in this Time of the year? The answer to this is all correlated, the predominant currents coming from the South Pacific deep sea trenches crash with the continental shelf creating a stream of upwelling, forming nutrient-rich regions, not only ideal for targeting pelagic fishes but also bring the visit off hump Back whales, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity that only happens during a short period of time every year, so bring all you family on board, even nonfisherman because everybody Will have a blast!

The fishing species in Panama are pretty well marked mainly in 2 seasons: The rainy season is in the summer; this time, the waters get warm, which is best for sea fishing. The other season is winter, which is not a cold winter (same temperatures as summer), but it's when the water gets chilly. And we focus on deep-water species. However, between these marked fishing species seasons, there are unexpected species surprises! For example, since June, we've been getting a more active than usual number of sailfish on our bites. From half-day trips to Extended trips, the extended South Pearl Islands and full-day Pearl Islands have the most sailfish catches. We practice catch-and-release for this species, and when possible, we board the species for a nice picture and then release it. The most popular lures for attracting them have been Ballyhoo rigged with an artificial skirt and normal fake surface squids.

The first rains of the season only mean something: deep sea fishing season is ON! Red snapper and its buddies from coastal bottom structures are still biting. However, on our way to the islands for these targeted species, we are dedicating some time to deep-sea fishing, and this will start becoming normal as we enter summer. Rain combined with southern currents will start warming waters, bringing nutrient-rich deep sea currents. The addition of rivers flushing rainwater with driftwood will all combine to form long drift lines to target our favorite pelagic species like tuna, mahi, sailfish, and wahoo!

If you ask our crew which is their favorite time of the year, they will definitely choose peak times of certain species of "transition seasons." By this, we mean changing seasons and species. The reason to like "transition season" is the variety of fish three expands since you can catch very distinct species. For example, you can catch pelagic deep-sea species like mahi or tuna, as well as grouper, which is a coastal structure bottom species, all on the same day!

As biologists have reported, we have fenómeno del niño, for fishing this has brought lots of surprises for example: - species that normally are gone when the water gets colder have actually stayed around, for example mahi mahi and wahoo which were not normally seen back until june, when the rain starts. However they have stayed all year bitting our lines - seas that are known for getting choppy due to the north trade winds that create winter. This year as you have noticed snow fall hasnt been that strong, that means in our tropical weathers patters winds are not hitting that hard there seas have been quite calm. This means a comfortable cruise and for fishing it's easier to spot bait balls and any surface fishing activity - a great plus! Whales have stayed in the area, therefore as you fish feel free to enjoy this magical event of nature On the traditional side of the season, the common species for this days have been bottom species: red snapped, grouper and amberjack have been top catches. We have been using trolling, live bait (shrimp or minnows) and jiggs to target them. Within the tuna family theres a very looked after and exotic specie of tuna bitting our lines and this is Albacore Tuna. Beside being a short term specie its delicious! So count on the crew fileting your catch for great sashimi on board Even though on some parts of the atlantic like south east coast of the USA amberjack is seen as a specie with parasites, we on the other hand fish the Pacific ocean of Panama where theres zero parasites on these species!
