The long awaited Spring Snook season is slated to open tomorrow, March 1st, 2023 in Sarasota! Yay, it’s about time. It’s been closed for capture for almost 5 years mostly due to environmental impacts. The month of December started abnormally warm. We now did a complete reversal with a big artic chill at our Christmas doorstep. That’s just what the doctor ordered because the change of conditions is the catalyst needed to change up the inshore game. We’re catching now, lots of keeper fish like Sheepshead, Black drum, Redfish, Gulf flounder, and others. Catch and release snook we’re going strong too but will soon be seeking refuge from the cold spell coming our way. We start a gradual warming trend after Christmas to above normal temps late next week. In my expert opinion, that’s when the fishing heats up during these high pressure warm spells. The first week of snook season is doing awesome for clients. Getting keepers so far on every trip. Snook, is the most sought after inshore gamefish and is easily targeted from land via the beach, inlets, jetties and piers. Also, due to their shallow water feeding behavior, they’re an excellent specie to sight fish, especially from the beach. Having the right conditions and right bait is very impressive to set up a day of success.
