Fresh Capt. Trentin Leary Fishing Reports
1/2/24 Ringing in the New Year January F
January 1, 2024
Got out just for fun with my family to do a little bottom fishing on the Islamorada patch reefs. Fishing was good we caught a bunch of yellow jacks for the table... they are really great eating especially if you like sashimi. On the bigger rods there was a steady grouper bite too, unfortunately grouper season is closed now but they are still fun to catch and quite a battle to pull out of the rocks sometimes. As long as the weather is fairly decent getting out to the patch reefs is definitely possible on most trips and provides tons of variety and good table fare usually.

Great fishing over Christmas Week in Isl
December 31, 2023
Lots of action over the Christmas week. Its a super busy time we fished multiple trips a day over the last week so a little tough to keep up. But the patch reefs were very produtive on our half days. Good snapper, grouper, mackerel, and more out there. Plenty of fish for dinner for my clients. We had some nice resident snook as well which are a fun way to break things up and offer a bit more challenge to those who seek it. January is usually not super busy quite yet but offers great angling options with the cooler weather. Lets get out fishing soon book your trip today!

12/23/2023 Great half day fishing around
December 23, 2023
Got out for a half day this morning and we had good action all around. The goliath grouper bite was ON at the bridges we released several while fishing our larger baits around the bridge pilings. Had a few break us off too but that is always part of it when fishing for grouper! We got a box full of dinner too including some snapper, porgy, and other fish. Christmas week is upon us and it's definitely getting busy busy here in the Keys you can see the traffic building. I've got some availability the coming week make sure to get something on the books before it's too late!

Finally... a nice day!
December 18, 2023
Well after almost a week of not seeing the sun from some crazy late season tropical system that hit us we finally had a nice day again! Over the weekend we had torrential rain and wind at a steady 30 knots gusting to 50, and some rainy days for several days before that too. Just crazy weather this year as we had another similar system a little over a month ago too. Normally the winter is dry season but not this year though hopefully that is the last of it. We did have another cold front push in that switched things up once the last rain bands went through last night the winds swung northeast and temps dropped to 65... not freezing cold but definitely a difference. We weren't sure what we'd find with the fishing as waters were very muddy in the bay and all that wind, weather, and rain surely switched things up. But it was good we had pretty good fishing on the patch reefs with various snappers, groupers, and more. Patch reefs are a good bet when the water gets stirred up as that is where you often have clean Atlantic water and when the dirty bay water mixes in, it brings lots of shrimp, crabs, and other things for fish to eat. We also got some nice local Islamorada snook which was really cool too. I've got some openings this week and some still for Christmas week so lets get something on the calendar!

Good day in the Everglades!
December 12, 2023
Got out with my boss and we had a good trip a few days ago. Cold weather moved in which is a possibility this time of year. Fishing was a little slow in the early part of the day but with an 8 degree temperature drop in the water I think the fish were slightly shocked. But by 1030 AM we got into a hot snook bite we caught about 20 in one spot. After that we picked a few more fish in various areas. Got a real nice snook in one spot and then a couple bigger redfish and a larger snook off the beaches outside of the creeks. Ive got availability now thru Xmas so give me a shout to get on some fish!

November Half Day Patch Reef fishing in
November 20, 2023
Got out on the patches for a trip today. The patches are sets of coral heads, sea fans, and lively hard bottom that are on the atlantic side of the Florida Keys. So not exactly the same as the 'backcountry' gulf side, but it's still fairly shallow 15-30 foot of water. The seacraft boat is great for fishing out here because of it's high gunwales and bow, so you can get out on these bits of reef even when the wind is blowing a little bit. Moreso than you could on a skiff anyways. And the fishing tends to be really good in the fall, winter, and spring when the water is cooler out here. It's a great option on half days you can get good table fare, and pull on a big variety of fish. We had action with barracudas which was fun on light tackle. Also some various groupers on the bottom including a juvenile goliath. A huge nurse shark gave us a good battle as well look how big that sucker is! Hogfish were on the scene too which unfortunately we can't really keep much any longer due to regulations, but they are fun to catch and beautiful to see. And of course a variety of snappers out there too that we were able to get a bucket of for a meal. The phones starting to ring for Christmas week and season next year, and we still have some openings around Thanksgiving.
