This time of year the wahoo take center stage along the dropoff we fish only 15 minutes after leaving the dock! High speed trolling with bonito strips has been the best option for this fishery, and our bycatch includes sailfish, mahi mahi, kingfish, barracuda, and bonito.

The Spring time fishing has sprung and the biggest blackfin tuna of the year have arrived. We have been hooking into jumbo blackens on nearly every trip right now. The best way to keep them from being eaten by sharks is to troll for them at higher speeds. While trolling for the tuna we have been catching plenty of king mackerel, sailfish, and the occasional wahoo as well. Our best luck has been trolling with planers and bonito strips for bait. Here is a 30 lb wahoo we caught while trolling dead bait on the last day of January 2023! This is our favorite kind of fishing lately because it has been so consistent compared to other species like Mahi Mahi that have been elusive lately.

We've been seeing the best Mahi mahi run of the year with schools of "gaffer" sized fish migrating about 2 miles off our coastline. With the March full moon upon us, the wahoo fishing has really started to heat up in front of Boynton Beach Inlet. We have been catching wahoo in the 15-20lb range while trolling with dead baits and artificial lures. The best part about this kind of fishing is that it takes place less than 2 miles from the beach- only 15 minutes after leaving the dock. This time of year is the best time of year to catch these schoolie sized wahoo off our coast. The wahoo in the photo was caught last week during a Southeast wind. It weighed around 15 lbs.
