Warm weather, sunny skies and suddenly we find ourselves halfway through May. The first half of May has been enjoyable and we have had charters of families with kids, couples, two bachelor parties and a corporate group outing aboard with us here on our two Marlin My Darlin boats. Good fun and some good fishing and we welcome the remaining half of the May charters. The ocean is offering quite a few different species as one would expect for May and our deep sea fishing charters here in Fort Lauderdale have been blessed with the pleasant weather I mentioned. Dry dry dry here but that will soon change as the so called ” April showers” begin later as a rule here and they are just around the corner now. We have seen and expect to continue to see Sailfish atop and along the reef lines and Kingfish in those same areas. Bonitos on the reefs and structure and the big ones pull hard. Tasty Blackfin Tunas most often just off the reefs edges but not necessarily. The larger Tunas and Sailfish here (as well as Wahoo) are most often encountered within two miles of shore, often much closer. Big Amberjacks on wrecks and structure. Snappers when the current allows. Grouper season has opened but not going great guns there yet. This is my 48th year doing fishing charters in Ft. Lauderdale (and our senior Captains are of similar mileage). The ocean is our office and although it’s not always palm trees and bikinis it’s a good life. Wet a line with us. This second half of April has given us some good catches and also some good fish on our fishing charters in Ft Lauderdale. From birthday parties for children targeting smaller fish "action" charters to targeting larger fish to fishing for "whatever bites we are happy" we have had a busy month. And May is filling up fast so please call me asap direct @ **hidden content** to set your hopefully 1st choice of days aside for you. April and May in South Florida almost always has a chance of rain. Good news is that most are smaller and move quickly. some are actually "sun showers", but not all as an occasional one is fiesty, but again they move quickly. Spring has arrived (officially). A warm toasty 89 degrees here this afternoon for our fishing charter in Ft. Lauderdale this clear and almost flat calm Sunday. Snappers today, Amberjack, some Kings and Bonitos. We have had a fair number of Blackfin Tunas and some Wahoos this past week since our last report. Sailfish remain scattered in our area with only an occasional fish. Shark season is underway and Hammerheads are showing up in the spread when we target sharks, and also showing up when we aren't, such as aiming for Sails. Have had some good sized Amberjacks on the deep wrecks and this afternoon our afternoon charter found 5 Kings along the reef line,. There have been very few Kings other than an occasional larger one. The Blackfins can bite any time of day but they continue to pop up best in the afternoon. So don't be reserved about taking a fishing charter in Ft. Lauderdale in the afternoon in the near future as afternoons have been decidedly stronger for those Tunas. Most all are footballs but as you see in the one photo there are some larger ones. Tomorrow marks the 1st day of Spring and we are actually in the midst of one of our infrequent cool fronts. Very small change in temperature of only several degrees but we have a possibility of some rain showers tomorrow as the front pushes through. Choppy today with the front slowly moving through. We have had some very nice fish yet again it has been difficult to have a string of good catch days. We are looking at a very reasonable forecast weather wise as we move through the week. Onshore winds will knock the edge off the returning warmer weather and also give us good opportunities for live baiting with the kites. And in what seems to be a blink of the eye we are half way through March. True Chamber of Commerce weather as day after day is in the mid to upper 80s with no rain and pleasant sea conditions for our fishing charters in Ft. Lauderdale. Blackfin Tunas, Bonito on or near the surface and large Amberjacks down deep on the wrecks. We have had some Mahi and Wahoo as well. Sailfish remain iffy in this area. Reasonable numbers of sharks in the area but we had a trip with sharks on the wish list but couldn't make it happen. And there are again days mixed in with good catch days that the fishing can be tough no matter what you target. As we move into the later days of March and into April and May there should be fewer lumps in the road. Proper Ft. Lauderdale fishing attire as we work through March will continue to be t shirts, shorts and a hat as it has been for at least the past month. Old man Winter never really stopped by (yet?). As we move through February we continue to see similar trends as the last month also with the continuing recent trend of warmer days not typically experienced in February. We think of February as “cooler”in South Florida, many up the line think of it as downright cold. Well the “cooler” here on our fishing charters in FT. Lauderdale as of late most likely will feature a high into the 80s if not mid 80s. And dry, day after day. One very major rain event a couple of weeks back a memory and now you better be up early now to catch a glimpse of dew because it will quickly be gone. Summertime amounts of sunscreen and away we go. Most days have quite comfortable sea conditions but with the occasional choppy day that comes with every February. Some days the fish cooperate (especially the Tunas and Jacks), and other days they continue to rub our noses and everybody else's in the dirt. We have had some very nice fish if you follow us and we have had again the slim pickin days we try so hard to avoid. Sailfish catches over the weekend followed by a vanishing act. Searching one day wondering what you might have learned over 40+ years at this and then the Cadillac trip the next day with bending rods and reels humming. February fishing has always been all over the charts. Some of that cold, not cooler weather of February's past would be welcomed from a fisherman's perspective.
