Fresh Chincoteague Fishing Reports

Shorter days, falling leaves and fish on the bite. As we wind up the fall and move towards winter, the fishing has not let us down. Our salmon season was disrupted by a drought on Lake Ontario, so we did two steelhead junkets instead, with a good result on both voyages. Back home, the flounder bite has remained consistent to date, with 14 fish netted this weekend alone. We await the arrival of our winter striped bass. Seeing reports of vast schools off the New Jersey coast has us hopeful for this cold weather fishery. As things shut down here we will look south to Rudee inlet in Virginia Beach for winter redfish and trout . Stay tuna'd, Aloha!

As we enter the last week of October, the north winds are beginning to howl. The trout have left, the Stripers are not yet here (well, maybe a few!), but the Flounder save the day. Our Sunday trip found the bite fast and furious. Keepers were few few, but the action was steady. There are a few stripers around, but it takes dead-eye casting and good hook-setting to bring one on. This should improve as the weather cools. We are returning to the Lake Erie shoreline next week to have some Steelhead fun. If you'd like to play along let me know. The current drought and heat wave in upstate NY forced us to resort to plan B for salmon season, going to Lake Erie for some early steelhead fishing. While not many steelhead have arrived at the tributaries yet, there were enough fish that were eager to eat and put on a show. In two days of fishing we had 4 fish to hand with many more hook-ups, "Fish on!, Fish off..." looking forward to returning in early November when things should really start to heat up. In the meantime, we'll have to stay busy in Chincoteague with speckled trout, flounder and striped bass. See you out there, Aloha!

We are officially opening the fall sportfishing season after a busy trip yesterday yielded an inshore slam including a keeper flounder. The cooler temperatures are on the way, moving fish around and making them hungry. Conditions should improve from now to Thanksgiving. Weekdays are best as we have the water to ourselves most days. Tropical Storm Erin put an early end to shark season, roiling waters and dropping water temps by 15 degrees. As the weather has settled and temps continue to cool Speckled Trout have begun to show back in the marsh. Mostly small now, their size should improve as we move into September. Flounder have resumed eating, and hopefully their size will improve as well. We even had an early Striped Bass on yesterday's trip, showing you can never tell what's at the other end of the line in the fall. Autumn has come early this year, with some delightful cool weather. As the water temperatures begin to fall, we can expect the warm loving sharks to begin their migration south, along with the croakers and kingfish. Speckled trout and puppy drum should start to show in our marshes and creeks, and a few early striped bass will take up residence along points and structures. Flounder will re-energize and bite well into the fall. The first week of October will find us in Pulaski NY for the King Salmon run, and we will be in Erie PA the first week of November for the beginning of the Steelhead run.
