The captain and first mate were great. The fish didn’t want to cooperate fully but fish were caught by everyone aboard. Seeing the crab pots worked and then going into the flat to dig clams were also good experiences. So don’t be afraid of trying the afternoon adventure.

Chincoteague has all of the charm of a small beach town island without the presumptuous and stiffy entitlement that comes along with many other beach towns. The fisherman of Chincoteague are salt of the Earth type people who are kind, helpful, and will bend over backward to make your day on the water memorable!

Many of the fish species are migratory, so good to check ahead of time and know what to expect. No matter the fishing, it is still nice to get out on the water. A bad day fishing is still a pretty good day.

I have fished Chincoteague from pier, shore, rented boat, and by charter. If you are looking to be on the fish quickly go with a local charter like Captain Tim of Chincoteague Bay Adventures. He knows where the fish are and what baits are working. You will spend less time fishing and more time catching!

The trip was great, but May is not a good time. The fishing is slow, but before May and after May would be great. We happened to be right in between the right times to go. However, the weather and the boat ride were beautiful.

End of season fishing for flounder water is getting too warm and a storm kicked up the bay but we caught some small striped bass(rock), sea trout and spot. But what a surprise when I hooked a 4 ft. Dusky Shark which really put up quite a fight. I had never experienced anything quite like that and Captain Tim talked me through it until I finally got the shark to the side of the boat for him to lift into the boat ...Wow!!

It was thought to catch what we were looking for. The Captain and mate were upfront with the possibility of not catching targeted fish due to weather. But we still had fun and enjoyed the trip.

It is a hit or miss with fishing in late July through the end of August. Normally most of the flounder have moved out but the croaker are moving in so you should be able to find them and have fun.

If you are just looking for flounder try to make your trip early in the year. Around April/May. It’s cold then but the fish seem to be a little more plentiful.

Might wait till the waters warm up a bit. But then the crowds will be there too. We enjoyed the quieter waters.

Good variety of fish to bring up. Croaker, pigfish, fluke, spot, kingfish. Keeps your lines tugging while you wait for the shark line to pull.
