Fresh Broward County Fishing Reports

Some quality fish around but you have to work hard for them this time of year. Tuna, mackerel, african pompano, and even a few mahi still being caught.

As we slowly ease into spring time fishing, some days are better than others. We had some virginia folks on the boat for a half day in the afternoon. The weather picked up and it got pretty windy and the waves got large but we stuck it out and quickly made it worth it. We caught a double hook up of sailfish and 2 sharks.

Hello everyone Capt. Vinnie here, this week the fishing has for sure picked up and has been much more consistent then last week as well as the week before that. For the report this week I will start offshore, we had a couple of days this week with some easterly winds which is somewhat rare for this time of year the wind had brought in some turtle grass and in the grass there was a few mahi mahi. January is far from the season when we would see mahi in Fort Lauderdale but hey if they want to bite I'm all for it. All of this action was around 500 feet of water on out to 700 feet. Our baits fished on the surface were getting the most action but with all the grass around it was hard to keep them clean. There also was some bird activity on the weed lines which gave the hint there was some kind of game fish around. Moving inshore on the reef there has been a few bonitos as well as an odd and end kingfish, still some sailfish around but nothing in numbers right now, the best bet for fishing on the reef right now would be to fish with live bait. If you spend most of your day live bait fishing you may not get many bites but the fish you do get will be quality. If your looking to do some trolling the best bet would be afternoon, the blackfin tuna bite seems to be the most consistent thing going right now. From 3:30pm to dark seems to be the magic hour when the tuna have been biting at there best. The best baits for the tuna right now continue to be small spoons fished on the planners, alot of the tunas right now have been eating small minnows and squid, when we catch tunas I always look into there stomachs to see what there eating so we can try to match exactly that. We have a great picture this week that one of our customers sent me from some sushi rolls that they made with the fresh tuna they caught. Looks great! Last but not least the bottom fishing has really been exceptional we have been catching our per person limit pretty much every charter that we spend time bottom fishing. Vermillion snappers have been the primary catch mixed in with lane snappers and some really nice porgies. All these species are some of the best eating around. Depths around 200 feet has been the best, average size on the snappers has been 1-3lbs. Snuck out on a quick afternoon with troy and his buddy, catch a sailfish and some blackfin tunas!

Temperatures in the glades today were in the low 60s. The water temp was at a crisp 62 degrees (definitely not ideal for fishing). Howling winds and a brief rain storm but the fish were still biting. Just goes to show that with a little hard work and knowledge of the area, fish can still be caught even in tough conditions.
