Striped Marlin & Double Dorado Success (

On June 17, we began the trip working 2 miles offshore, running south parallel to the coastline. While fishing off Cabeza de Ballena, we spotted a striped marlin tailing on the surface and pitched a live bait known locally as a cocinero. Despite a perfect presentation, the marlin refused to bite. Continuing south along the same line, off El Tule, the action finally turned on when a sailfish struck a bait and was successfully landed after an exciting fight. We then moved closer to shore, where we experienced a double dorado hookup. One fish struck a Petrolero lure, while the other attacked a pink trolling lure. Both mahi mahi were successfully brought aboard. On the afternoon of June 17, we headed toward San José del Cabo, working the 2-mile line parallel to the coast. Just after deploying the trolling spread off Primeras Piedras, a mahi mahi struck one of the lures. Unfortunately, after a brief fight, the fish managed to throw the hook. Continuing along the same course, about 10 minutes later, we hooked a skipjack tuna, which was successfully landed and released. A short time later, a mahi mahi aggressively attacked a blue and white Flying Fish lure, resulting in a successful catch and our first fish on board. We remained in the productive area, making several passes through the spot, where we hooked three additional skipjack tuna, all successfully released. On June 13, we began trolling approximately 2 miles off Cabeza de Ballena, where we immediately found exceptional billfish activity. Throughout the morning, we observed numerous striped marlin cruising and feeding on the surface. We made several live bait presentations, casting baits directly in front of the fish in an effort to trigger a bite. While working the area, a mahi mahi struck one of our baits and was successfully landed and brought aboard. As the day progressed, the marlin activity only increased. We encountered groups of marlin throughout the fishing grounds, including several occasions where three striped marlin were feeding on the surface at the same time. We presented both live bait and rigged dead bait, but the fish remained extremely selective.
