Trip Summary
Fall fishing out of Campbell River is quietly one of the best-kept secrets, and today proved it. Christopher made the trip from Brandon for his very first salmon charter, and Captain Bruce put him right on the fish aboard the 17' Boston Whaler Montauk.
Conditions were close to perfect. Air at 15°C, broken clouds, and 10km of visibility with the fog long burned off. Wind barely registered and the water sat flat calm at 1 metre or less — rewarding conditions for a first-timer learning the ropes.
We ran the afternoon flood through Seymour Narrows, working the back eddies as the current eased toward the 2:00 PM slack. That's prime time, and it showed. Trolling hoochies behind flashers down between 100 and 180 feet, the rod loaded up and the drag went singing. The best fish came in chrome bright at 13 lbs — a solid reward for a kid on his first cast.
Three in the box, three released. Water temp read 14.6°C, keeping the fish active and willing. The Last Quarter moon gave us a Good solunar day, and the evening feeding window lined up with the softening tide.
The Montauk is nimble, intimate, and ideal for one or two anglers who want the classic open-boat experience with a veteran guide. We depart Coast Marina A Dock with free parking at Tyee Plaza.
