Summary

Started off catching some sardines and cigar minnows on the way out for bait.  Got to the first spot and bite was on immediately.  Pulled up some above avg. size lane snapper as well as mangrove snapper, vermilion snapper, and some big red snapper.  Went to another spot because it was hard to get passed the red snapper, which are smothering the reefs right now making it tricky to catch the other species.  At that spot the red snapper were swarming and literally couldn’t catch anything but them and broke off on some big ones too.  I set up a rod with heavier tackle to try and get one of the big ones off the reef but wasn’t prepared for what was about to happen.  A live bait got slammed and next thing you know the boat is getting pulled forward past the anchor at the mercy of a goliath grouper estimated over 300lbs!!  After about a 45 min. fight and pulling the anchor up to let him drag us around, this prehistoric creature surfaced. Took some pictures and then vented the fish so it could descend back to the bottom.  Pictures don’t do this one justice!  You could easily fit a basket ball in his mouth!!
