Trip Summary
Awesome three weeks fishing and exploring out in Florida Bay, and The Keys. Got to fish the Herman Lucerne Tarpon Cup out of Islamorada with a good friend of mine and had a lot of fun. Day 1 we found two laid up Tarpon asleep next to some shallows. My angler Chris casted once and put the fly right in front of her face. The fish woke up and moved off not biting the fly. about 2 minutes later the two fish circled back and Chris made another great presentation and the fish garbaged it! As Chris was clearing the line a giant knot ripped through all the guides and after a few jumps Chris handlined his fish for about 2 minutes while I worked on the knot. It was so bad the knot stripped the coating off the flyline core. We eventually got a face grab on the fish and all was right with the world.
As far as the other species in the park;
The snook are staging now and starting to spawn so the big ones are definitely around in certain places. catching a snook over 30" is definitely a trophy sized fish. one over 35" and your pushing the limits to how big they can get in the Everglades. I've seen 40 inches and larger but have not been able to catch them.
The redfish have been difficult to find but hopefully with more rain we'll start seeing some bigger schools and tailers out in the really skinny water. The trout fishing has been fairly good and we've been catching a few nice ones every day. The big tarpon seem to be not as abundant as last year. The only ones I've caught were in the tournament itself.
On a recent trip we caught and landed the biggest bull shark ever caught off of my boat. It was about 7 1/2ft long and weighed probably 250lbs. The snapper bite recently has been really good we found some good size ones in a few areas and that's been a lot of fun.
Besides fishing there's a lot of other cool wildlife present in the park. I saw some water moccasins crossing the road on the way out one day. The crocodiles are also around on the low tides. The dolphins have been working the mullet out in the bay. The Everglades is a special place. This time of year is really good fishing. If you'd like to book a trip let me know.
