Many of our Gulf and Bay species are seeking comfortable water temperatures in the heat of the summer. Mid May, June, July, August and even early September in Tampa Bay will hit 90 plus degrees! What that means for us as a general statement is deeper fishing is better here during the summer. There are still fish to be caught in close ( inside 20 miles) we have a few species that like the warmer water barracuda sharks, mangrove snapper will be found closer as well as some Spanish mackerel and Bonita... Warm temps can sometimes mean a lethargic bite... Moving water and a fresh lively bait can do the trick but as a general rule the hotter it gets the deeper waters are more productive. If you're fishing in the bay and early morning bite typically is going to be better than a p.m. bite. Offshore the further out you go the cooler the water temperature the surface temp may still be high greater depths are generally cooler holding some of your larger bottom fish...
