Tarpon

Trip Summary

Had Garrett down fishing with me he had called directly and had hopes of catching a tarpon. It was his shot to do it visiting from Minnesota. January typically isn't great overall for tarpon because of the colder weather we often get. But we were on a warming trend and those fish can seemingly show up overnight when conditions get right. That usually means water temperatures in the mid 70s or so. It wasn't quite there yet but it was still a calm sunny afternoon. We fished for a bit and didn't see a whole lot early nor had a ton of action. But eventually we were in the right spot when hundreds of tarpon starting pouring through! We were just about to leave too and we gave it some more time and sure enough we hooked into a beast! We got a lot of good jumps and fight out of her and were lucky enough to get the fish boatside for a good picture. Right now the forecast doesn't have any more cold in the foreseeable future (the next 7 days or so) so tarpon are a definite possibility. This was also on a half day trip close to home so it doesn't necessarily even take a full day. Of course this can all change if more cold comes and that is definitely possible in February but you can always ask me first if I think it's feasible.
