The kids were sad not to have caught any fishโฆ But I guess that is how fishing trips go sometimesโฆ
Booked a half day trip with capt. Ryan.ย Got yo the dock and it was a different capt.? Okay fair enough, she seemed nice and plenty friendly.ย Boat seemed to be well kept and clean. ย ย My biggest problem was lack of attention to detail with the fishing gear.ย Two of our trolling lines got tangled and it was late into our trip (maybe 2/3 of the way) that our guide said something doesnโt look right? Well what she mentioned had been like that since shortly after we started trolling so me and the others on board figured those two lines mustโve been tangled for most of the trip.ย And the two lines that were tangled were over the top of a third line, so we suspect we were trolling only one line for almost the entire trip!ย Gee wonder why we couldnโt get a bite!ย ย ย After the captain finally noticed, the tangle was so bad (worst Iโve seen in my entire fishing lifetime of 40 years) it took us probably a good 20-30 mins to get three of the rods back up to fish and we fished with only three rods while the captain tried to repair the mess with the 4th rod.ย At this point weโd been out for roughly 3 hours of our 4-5hour trip and our captain started to head back towards the harbor.ย We did get one take shortly after we fixed all our gear(surprise!) but unfortunately it came off shortly after.ย At this point we made one more pass and it was back to the harbor promptly at 10am. ย ย On a positive note, we did see many whales breaching which was definitely pretty cool, but this was a fishing trip.ย If we wanted to just see whales we wouldโve booked a cheaper whale watching tour.ย ย ย So all in all I would definitely NOT recommend booking a fishing trip with Hawaii Ocean Adventure Tours.ย If you are looking for whale watching it some of the other trips they offer that do not include fishing Iโm sure they would go fine.ย Iโve an avid freshwater fisherman (this was my first real saltwater trip) and have gone on numerous charters before in the CA delta and San Francisco Bay but this was the only charter Iโve ever been on where I questioned the captains fishing prowess.ย I get sometimes the fish just donโt bite, but I believe our lack of success was directly related to our captains poor attention to detail.ย If your looking for an actual fishing charter definitely look elsewhere.

Bryan, first of all thank you for your review. We are A family based business; that being said I cannot possibly be on every single charter every single day. I have a family with two young children who require my attention sometimes as well as my wife Who deserves my attention at least today which is Valentineโs Day. My question to you is that if you noticed something that looked out of the ordinary like lines being crossed why wouldnโt you mention that to the captain? The captain, even though it may look like they are not doing much is always looking out for any indications as to where the Fish are to try to optimize the number of bites on a trip. That includes watching the sonar, checking speed, looking for birds, or schools of fish on the surface, etc. I am certain that Kelley did everything in her power to put fish on the deck. So while they are looking forward and something looks awry with the lines itโs always a good idea to speak up and let the Captain know if something looks out of the ordinary. I guess Iโm a bit confused on why you wouldnโt bring something as important crossed lines up to the captains attention(since you noticed so early on) if they hadnโt noticed; it seems like that would be counterproductive for everyone. My advice is the next time you go fishing and you see something that is as common as crossed lines you bring it to the captains attention as soon as possible. I think it would be something that would be to everyoneโs benefit.
