There’s a reason why deep sea fishing in Mexico can usually be found right at the top of an angler’s bucket list. With access to the Carribean Sea, Pacific Ocean, and the Gulfs of Mexico and California, you’ll be spoiled for choice when it comes to the hundreds of species on offer. What to Expect
For Beginners
Mexico’s west coast is probably what most anglers think of when they hear “deep sea fishing,” with Baja Sur Peninsula being especially popular. Here you’ll find the famous resort city of Cabo San Lucas, which is also an excellent place to wet your line!
Thanks to the sudden drop created by the area’s continental shelf, anglers will find themselves coming face-to-gills with Sailfish, Blue Marlin, and White Marlin a mere mile or so from shore. Big game fishing without the usual lengthy travel time? This makes Cabo San Lucas the perfect place for families and newer anglers who are just discovering their sea legs.
In addition to Cabo San Lucas, Cozumel and Playa del Carmen also shine when it comes to newbie-friendly deep sea fishing. Charter captains here have plenty of experience when it comes to showing tourists and newbies the ropes, so you’ll be in safe hands.
More Experienced Anglers
If you have more experience under your belt, head to the party city of Cancun. Regularly rated as one of the top ten Billfish locations in the world, you’ll have to travel between 15–20 miles offshore before you can troll the hotspots – but when you do, it’s worth it.
You’ll battle Sailfish, Marlin species, huge Wahoo, Mahi Mahi, and plenty more. Charters here will happily take you out for extended full day trips, too, so you can really hone in on the hotspots and hook that Billfish Grand Slam of your dreams.
Want to fish slightly off the beaten path? Head to Puerto Vallarta to explore two underrated deep sea hotspots: Roco Corbetania and El Banco. Located 40 and 50 miles from shore, respectively, you’ll need to opt for an extended full day trip to reach these waters, but you’ll be rewarded with trophy-sized Yellowfin Tuna, Sailfish, a trio of Marlin species, and whatever else is biting.
How to Prepare
Catch and release is preferred in Mexico, especially when it comes to Billfish – it’s only fair that other anglers get to experience the excitement of hooking them, after all. If you’re casting off alongside a charter captain, your fishing license will usually be covered for you, as well as everything you need for a productive day of angling action. All you need to bring is your best game face – these world-famous deep sea beasts won’t go down without a fight!

Our crew said that May is the ideal month to fish although you can catch interesting fish year round. We were on the tail end of the best fishing season when we went in late June.

We really enjoyed fishing but the sea was a bit rough. Cabo in May-June is changing seasons so the winds are very present. This made the sea a bit rough and for someone who gets motion sick it was a bit much. Just keep that in mind and go fishing in the morning and not in the afternoon if your fishing during these months.

The fishing was a little slow at times, but the Spanish Mackerel were biting big in the morning. Afternoon slowed down a bit. Were not able to link up any Mahi or Marlin, but did grab a Rooster to end the day!

Hire a boat because no matter how many fish you catch it's an enjoyable and fun adventure being on the water in Mexico. I also think it's nice to go with a small group so there's plenty of action for everyone and the personal attention is worth it.
