Every avid fly angler should experience outstanding Biscayne Bay fly fishing at least once in their lifetime. This is South Florida’s hub for fly rodders, where the bite is excellent all year, the fish are big, and the waters are crystal clear.
Anglers come to the bay with not-so-modest expectations of fulfilling all their fly fishing dreams, and more often than not, that’s exactly what happens!
What to Expect
The holy trifecta of the bay’s flats are Bonefish, Permit, and the mighty Tarpon. They’re the talk of the area, and the fiercest and fastest fighters. They’re also the ones that will challenge your skills to the maximum. But you better believe that it’ll be worth it.
Nothing beats outsmarting Bonefish – the “Grey Ghost of the Flats” – or coming face to gills with a massive Silver King (Tarpon) and winning. Want to practice your accuracy and stealth? Large Permit roam these waters and they’re always hungry. All you have to do is come up with a cunning fishing strategy.
Depending on what you’d like to target, you’ll use 8–12 wt rods. Lighter options are reserved for Bonefish. Twelve wt rods are the right choice for chasing giant Tarpon during their spring migration through the bay. You’ll also need a reliable saltwater reel with plenty of backing.
When it comes to flies, your charter captain will recommend what’s best to use, and more often than not, they’ll have all the necessary fly fishing gear on the boat. This is very convenient if you don’t feel like lugging around your equipment around.
What to Bring
You can easily find Biscayne Bay fly fishing guides anywhere from Miami to Homestead, so all you need to do is pick a location and a captain. Licenses and gear will be provided for you, which makes things much easier. Come aboard with some snacks, drinks, and sunscreen, and get ready for a fishing trip that will open new horizons for you!

I get that answer from several other guides I contacted October is slow season maybe it is coming up but contact various guides and see who sounds the best for sure I know which one does, I had the best..

Give yourself longer than half a day. There are many ways to fish (trolling, drifting, anchoring up, flat lining) not all fish are biting at the same time. So you want time to try out everything and catch as many fish as possible. If you can only do a half day, you may not be fully satisfied.

Just beware a dang cold front and dual thunder/lightening storms in early morning and afternoon. Guide was great and got us on the fish even in those challenging conditions but dang it was some work!
