Local species include Crayfish, Groupers, John Dory, Kahawai, Blue Marlin, Pink Maomao, Scorpionfish, Snappers, King fish, and more if conditions are right. For these species, you’re likely to troll and bottom fish using light or heavy tackle. Capt. Bucko also offers fly fishing, but you may need to bring your own fly gear. For the more adventurous among you, there’s spearfishing.
Captain Bucko Fish And Dive is a kid-friendly charter service, so get ‘em offline and onto the water! If you don’t have a child-sized life vest of your own, be sure to ask if there’s one on board. Feel free to bring your own snacks to keep up those energy levels!
You’ll be dropping lines from a 25’ Yamaha sportfishing vessel with space for 4 passengers. It has outriggers, a fighting chair, all the essentials no fishing machine can run without. There’s a toilet on board for your convenience. Rods, reels, and tackle are included, along with lures. Live bait is included, but it’s good to ask about this so you know if you’ll be catching it yourself.
Your fishing license for the day is covered by the charter boat, just show up ready for some fishing! Be mindful that some species may have special rules or limited seasons. Simply ask and your captain can tell you more.
Some essentials to bring are bottled water, sunscreen (non-spray), and sunglasses. Alcohol is allowed in moderation, just avoid hard liquor as well as glass bottles.

Half Day Trip – Kingfish
What a day!!! Kings and Snaps
I’m not sure it could have gone much better! We booked a 1/2 day Kingfish charter after a few days of unsettled weather, but conditions were perfect for us. A short stop to catch baitfish, quickly and efficiently done, and then on to “the spot”. A 13kg Kingfish took the bait on first drop, and then a 15kg followed that. A few nice Snapper took baits that strayed too close to the bottom and then more Kings, including a double hook-up. All fish kept were beautifully bled, cleaned and filleted by the Skipper. I can recommend Captain Bucko to experienced and inexperienced fishers alike.

Awesome day on the water
Captain Bucko was a pleasure to go out with for half a day in the bay of islands. He is extremely knowledgeable and kind, and got us onto plenty of fish. I left feeling exhausted from all the reeling - something that doesn’t always happen on fishing charters. We got onto some huge kingfish and snapper and I am very happy with the outcome. Highly recommend if you’d like to catch snapper or kingfish, be in good company, and be out on the water!
