Fishing in Spain

A fishing trip in Spain will show you that there’s plenty more to this country than tapas, sangria, and dance moves packed with Latin flair. Along with its beautiful culture and vibrant atmosphere, it’s also home to fresh and salt waters bustling with trophy-sized fish. You’ll be treated to some Mediterranean hospitality, as well as some world-famous species!

The River Ebro lies in wait for freshwater enthusiasts. Try out coarse fishing, and you’ll come face-to-gills with species such as Catfish, Carp, Pike, Black Seabass, as well as a small population of Salmon and Trout. Trips usually run anywhere from 4–8 hours, with autumn to spring being the most plentiful months. Novices can get to grips with these calm waters, whereas more experienced anglers can test their fly fishing skills!

Salt fishing fans will have the Atlantic and Mediterranean to explore – which means plenty of angling options along Spain’s coastlines. Offshore fishing here means huge Bluefin Tuna. The waters near Tarragona port are especially fish-filled only 6 kilometers from shore! Mahi Mahi, Little Tunny, Atlantic Mackerel, Amberjack, and Blue Shark also call these waters home. An eight-hour trip will give you the best chance of landing a Bluefin.

Spain also offers up some exciting reef fishing action. Head to the Balearic Islands for Snapper and Grouper, which make for seriously tasty table fare. You can also troll for Seabass, Dentex, and Conger eel. Most trips last between 4–8 hours, making this a great option for newbies and experienced anglers alike. Head further out in these waters, and you’ll encounter Albacore Tuna, Shortbill Spearfish, and Mahi Mahi, too.

Rules & Regulations

All anglers require a valid fishing license to cast a line here. Luckily, wherever you choose to go in Spain, your license will be covered as long as you fish alongside a charter captain.

Spain Fishing Seasons

January

Head to Caceres for a turnip food fight! This is also the cheapest month to visit Spain, with coarse fishing still great.

February

To brighten up a winter day, head to Barcelona for the Sitges Carnival. Love almonds? Go to Gran Canaria for the Almond Festival – there is a festival for everyone.

March

The annual flamenco festival Jerez Flamenco Festival is happening in March. Traveling in March is still relatively cheap in most of Spain. Head to Valencia for Las Fallas, where giant figurines are paraded then set on fire.

April

The weather varies around the country in April. Join in the Medio Maratón in Madrid or head to the Latin American film festival the Mostra de Cinema Llatinoamericà de Lleida.

May

Love tennis? Then don’t miss the Madrid Open. Or are cars more your speed? Then it’s off to the Spanish Formula One Grand Prix for you.

June

As it heats up, cool off at the Water and Ham festival for a cool water fight in Granada. June 23 is Noche de San Juan, so expect fireworks and celebrations throughout the country.

July

This is peak season, as the weather gets super hot consistently. Expect the locals to head to the coast to cool down. The running of the bulls, the Sam Fermin, happens in Pamplona early in the month. Or go to Benicassim, an epic festival in Valencia.

August

Now this is the food fight Spain is really famous for: the Tomatina Tomato Fight in Valencia. Expect over 50,000 people to thrown 100 tonnes of tomatoes at each other, then be hosed down in the street afterwards. Or run from the bulls in the Cuellar Bull Run in Segovia.

September

Celebrate this autumn with the Festa de la Mercè in Barcelona. Expect live music, fireworks, a parade or two – fun for the whole family.

October

For the thrill seekers out there, head to the Horror and Fantasy Film Festival in San Sebastian. Films are from all around the world.

November

The weather is really cooling off now, with only the southeast staying relatively warm. The International Theater Festival in Vitoria has been running for four decades and is great to see a variety of genres at the theatre.

December

December is all about the lead up to Christmas, with something for the whole family to do and enjoy together. From religious celebrations to incredible food, it’s a treat to see Spain at this time of year.
