Fishing in Seychelles

If you’re searching for a dreamlike travel destination and world-class fishing, you’re going to love Seychelles. It has something for everyone, whether you’d like to stalk the flats, explore the reefs, or hunt offshore. Just hop aboard one of the many Seychelles fishing charters and it’ll all be in the palm of your hand.

You don’t have to venture far to catch fish in Seychelles. The action starts right along the pristine flats surrounding the islands that make up the archipelago. Close to shore, you’ll get to fish for different kinds of Trevally, including Giant Trevally, as well as Bonefish, Milkfish, Bohar Snapper, and more.

As you move further from shore, you’ll discover an even greater variety of species. Colorful Triggerfish, Parrotfish, huge Grouper, Barracuda, and Wrasse are just a few of the many fish you’ll find prowling the reefs and coral beds. Sometimes, you’ll also see the likes of Mahi Mahi, Bonito, and even Yellowfin Tuna show up.

Of course, this part of the Indian Ocean is also a fantastic place to catch some pelagics. As you leave the Mascarene Plateau and hit the deeper waters, you’ll get your shot at Sailfish, Blue and Black Marlin, Wahoo, massive GT, and numerous other game fish.

Most of the fishing charters are concentrated on islands such as Mahé, Praslin, and La Digue. With proper planning, you can also fish the Outer Islands such as Alphonse, St. François, or Cosmoledo. The main season runs between October and May, as southeast winds can make the period between May and September not as favorable for fishing.

Rules & Regulations

In Seychelles, you can fish without having to buy a license, however, spearfishing is forbidden. Many captains take part in fish conservation efforts, so make sure to follow their guidelines on what fish you can keep.

Seychelles Fishing Seasons

January

In January, you can expect some of the heaviest rainfall of the year, accompanied by warm temperatures and relatively calm seas. Anglers on the southern islands should keep an eye out for cyclones.

February

Seychelles’ wet season continues. Now’s your chance to enjoy smooth sailing and a variety of game fish, from Marlin and Tuna to Snapper, Jobfish, and many more.

March

Marlin and Mahi Mahi are at their peak, as the northwest monsoon season carries on. For some of the year’s best Bonefishing, head to Desroches and you won’t be disappointed.

April

As the winds begin to change direction, you can enjoy some of the calmest weather of the year. April is a great time to experience variety in these waters, from tasty reef fish to big game trophies.

May

It’s the dry season in Seychelles, but strong winds can make the journey offshore risky at times. Charter cancellations are higher at this time of year due to the weather.

June

If you make it offshore on a relatively calm day, you’ll spend your time trolling for Sailfish, Marlin, and Tuna. Weather conditions usually don’t allow for other fishing techniques during the dry season.

July

Sailfish are at their peak, which makes this a great time to try trolling along the edge of the dropoff or inshore along the plateau. Light tackle anglers can enjoy popping for Giant Trevally closer to shore.

August

The southeast monsoon season continues, with dry, windy days forecast for weeks ahead. Weather permitting, you can still score some big game fishing while trolling offshore.

September

The local weather continues to be the biggest obstacle for anglers in Seychelles, who are eagerly awaiting their chance to head offshore and target a wider variety of fish.

October

Tired of trolling yet? Then you’ll be glad to know that the seasons are turning and better days are ahead! As calmer weather sets in you’ll be able to try jigging and bottom fishing for some table fare.

November

November is one of the best times to visit Seychelles. When the weather is fair, you’ll have a chance to catch local fish in a variety of ways – from bottom fishing, jigging, and popping to fly fishing.

December

Big game fish like Marlin, Tuna, and Mahi Mahi are at their peak in December. Take advantage of the weather and head to the dropoff for a hook-up to remember and end the year in style!
