Fishing in Nassau

As the capital of the Bahamas, Nassau is the epicenter of art, culture, nightlife, and fishing! Nassau is a real fishing hub, where avid anglers come to fulfill their biggest ambitions. Even if you’re a newcomer, don’t worry. There’s plenty of Nassau fishing charters to show you the way to the best spots.

The name of the game is deep sea fishing. It’s no surprise that the Bahamas boast some of the best big game action on the planet, and the Nassau nook of the archipelago is no different. Tuna, Marlin, Swordfish, Mahi Mahi, Wahoo – all the big names are prowling these productive waters practically year-round, so whenever you come, you’re in for a blast.

Reef species are the bread and butter of this fishery. They're abundant, always hungry, and on top of that, taste delicious. Snappers and Groupers are there for the taking, as well as the unique Nassau Grouper, named after its place of origin. Fly fishermen can also explore the local flats in search of Bonefish, Tarpon, and Permit.

Competitive anglers come here to attend a diverse range of fishing tournaments. The Bahamas Billfish Championship, Blue Marlin Cove Wahoo Classic, and Wahoo Smackdown are just a few of the most popular competitions to check out.

Most Nassau fishing charters offer half day and full day trips, and you should take your pick depending on what you’d like to target. Shorter jaunts mostly focus on reef fish, while longer expeditions are reserved for going after monster pelagics and Billfish.

You’ll easily find a guide in downtown Nassau and on Paradise Island.

Rules & Regulations

The boat, not the anglers, needs the permits in the Bahamas, so all registered Nassau fishing charters will have the paperwork sorted out for you. There are also bag and size limits and closed seasons for some species which your captain will advise you on.

Nassau Fishing Seasons

January
Winter Wahoo fishing is at its peak, making for awesome offshore action. January is one of the driest months, and the temperature is in that sweet 70ºF range, so this is also a decent time to hit the flats for some fly fishing.
February
Wahoo are still on form, and February is the end of the annual Wahoo Smackdown, so grab one of the many Nassau offshore charters and get ready for some high-speed action.
March
Big game fishing really starts to heat up, with the first of the Marlin showing up, joined by large numbers of Amberjack and Yellowfin Tuna. The Wahoo are still biting, too, making this a great time to be offshore!
April
Permit arrive inshore, joined by the first of the Tarpon. It’s also a great time to do some bottom fishing for Grouper and Snapper and go home with a royal catch. Billfish action is fantastic!
May
May is your best chance at bagging a Bluefin and a Yellowfin Tuna on the same trip. Sailfish are still around and the Marlin are heating up too, making May irresistible offshore. Closer to land, Grouper and Snapper are biting!
June
Prime Blue Marlin season sees a number of tournaments take place, like the Abaco Beach Blue Marlin Invitational, the second half of the Bahamas Billfish Championship, and the Abaco Outboard Marlin Series.
July
Swordfish are in full swing offshore, and Snapper and Grouper are filling up the reefs. Watch the rain though, because this is peak storm season, and maybe not the best for wade fishing inshore.
August
Grouper, Snapper, and Barracuda are still biting strong on the reefs. Inshore, Bonefish are everywhere, and there are still decent numbers of Permit and Tarpon as well.
September
The last few Billfish can be caught offshore, but don’t worry, Swordfish are still at their best. Mahi Mahi are biting well, too, and the reefs are teeming with Snapper and Grouper, making for productive offshore fishing.
October
The heat and the rain finally start coming to a halt in October, and with them, so do a lot of the offshore species. Wahoo are starting to arrive, though, and there are always Bonefish inshore.
November
The rain finally leaves as Wahoo fishing picks up. November is also the beginning of the annual Wahoo Smackdown, which is worth checking out. You've also got active reefs and great flats fishing if that's more your scene.
December
If you're visiting in December, you have to check out Junkanoo. This huge festival promises colorful parades, great music, dancing, and loads of fun! Oh, and there's world-class Wahoo and Bonefishing, in case you get bored!
