Fishing in Port Alberni

Port Alberni, renowned as the "Salmon Capital of the World," offers unparalleled fishing adventures in British Columbia's biodiverse waters. Nestled at the head of Alberni Inlet, this destination connects anglers to prime salmon migration routes, where massive Chinook, acrobatic Coho, and abundant Sockeye surge through the fjord-like passage from May through September. The Inlet's protected waters yield fast action minutes from the dock, while nearby Barkley Sound teems with trophy Chinook near Pill Point and Swale Rock during late summer peaks.

Beyond salmon, these nutrient-rich channels support robust year-round fisheries for Pacific Halibut and feisty Lingcod, with winter months revealing prized steelhead runs in the Stamp River system. Guided Port Alberni fishing charters expertly navigate these varied ecosystems, employing specialized techniques like mooching for salmon and deepwater jigging for bottom species. Charter boats are equipped with fishfinders, GPS, and live wells to maximize success, while seasoned captains share generations of local knowledge on migratory patterns and river-to-ocean transitions.

Anglers access diverse experiences from half-day harbor excursions to immersive 8-hour Barkley Sound adventures, where orcas and eagles frequent the backdrop. All charters provide rods, tackle, and catch processing, though anglers must secure BC tidal licenses and conservation stamps. With derbies like September's Salmon Festival celebrating historic runs, Port Alberni fishing charters deliver world-class angling against Vancouver Island's breathtaking coastal mountains.

Port Alberni Fishing Seasons

January

You can enjoy some superb fishing action around Port Alberni in winter. Feeder Chinook are bustling about in Barkley Sound, while the winter Steelhead are giving fly fishermen a run for their money in the rivers.

February

You’re not likely to head offshore anytime soon, but the protected waters of Barkley Sound are full of promise. Chinook, Crab, and Steelhead continue to be the main source of action around here.

March

Anglers are eager to get out on the water as average temperatures start creeping as high as 51°F. Some years, Halibut season may be open by now. Even if it’s not, there’s plenty of Chinook to keep you preoccupied.

April

If you’re tired of Chinook and Steelhead (as if that’s possible!) you’ll be glad to know that the lakes are crowded with Rainbow Trout by now. Bide some time there until the summer Salmon run kicks in.

May

The Sockeye will be storming Alberni Inlet soon, just make sure the fishing season is open. Halibut are entering their peak on the outskirts of Barkley Sound, where summer Chinook are also starting to appear.

June

Port Alberni’s Sockeye run is in full swing by now, while Coho and summer Chinook are coming in right behind them. Expect the inlet to be crowded with fishermen and thousands of these fish!

July

July is one of the best times to fish in Alberni Inlet, with no shortage of Salmon in sight. If the weather has been cooler lately, try fishing the rivers for some explosive light tackle and fly action.

August

This is one of the busiest months in the inlet. Pink Salmon will be joining the party by mid-August, while preparations for the annual Port Alberni Salmon Festival get under way.

September

Anglers can hook into all 5 Pacific Salmon species while fishing the inlet in fall. Offshore, there’s no shortage of Halibut and Lingcod. Labor Day marks the local Tyee Derby, one of the largest in British Columbia.

October

You can hook into the last of the trophy Chinook and Coho during October, or fish the rivers for Salmon and Steelhead. Average temperatures might still soar as high as 58°F on some days.

November

The last of the migrating Salmon will be passing through the inlet at this time of year. Fly fishermen are heading to the rivers to catch the Steelhead run while anglers in the sound are bottom fishing.

December

There’s still great fishing to be had here in Port Alberni, but weather can pose complications. On a good day, you can have great success fishing for Crab, Halibut, and winter Chinook in the sound.
