Top Fishing Charters in St. Catharines

On a St. Catharines fishing adventure, you’ll have access to diverse waterways, different trip options, and a whole host of delicious and fun to catch fish. This charming city in Canada’s Niagara Region really has it all. Great shops and restaurants, a vibrant arts and culture scene, and best of all – excellent angling.

With Lake Ontario and the Niagara River at your fingertips, it’s no wonder your target list is extensive. This is a year-round fishing destination and the species you can hook into include Chinook and Coho Salmon, Brown and Lake Trout, Steelhead, Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass, Walleye, and Pike.

You can target most of these species in shallow waters year-round, meaning half day trips are a great option for everyone. In the summertime, some of the coveted fish, like Salmon and Trout, move into deep offshore waters. Opt for full day trips during this period to make the most out of the fishery. If the weather conditions allow for it, ice fishing trips are a great choice in winter.

Where you’ll look for a fishing charter will depend on where you’re planning to fish. For trips on Lake Ontario, head to Port Weller or Port Dalhousie. To fish the Niagara River, charters departing from nearby Niagara-on-the-Lake provide the easiest access.

Rules & Regulations

All anglers between the ages of 18–64 will need to purchase an Ontario fishing license before hopping aboard a charter vessel. To ensure you’re fishing within the law, it’s always best to head out with a reputable guide.

January
The main action happens at the Niagara River, where you can target Steelhead and Walleye. Make sure to dress warmly, with layered clothing.

February
It’s still low season and you have the best chances of landing a catch in the lower section of the Niagara River. The fish don’t bite as hard when it’s this cold, so wait a few moments before you start reeling.
March
Ice fishing in St. Catharines is slowly coming to an end. While Salmon still lay low, Trout begin to appear in higher numbers.
April

St. Catharines charter boats are back on Lake Ontario and ready to make the most of the spring season. Salmon slowly start their migration from the rivers into the lake.

May

Coho and Chinook rule the waters and Lake, Brown, and Rainbow Trout are right behind them. They’ll stick to the shallow waters, so your lines will be wet in no time.

June

This month includes two occasions for which you won’t need a fishing licence – Father’s Day Weekend and Family Fishing Week. Make the most of it and head out in search of Salmon.

July

The peak season is on and there are three things you need to do: troll, troll, troll! Whether you’re using spoons, plugs, or flat-lining – everything’s biting!

August

As summer gets hotter, the fish move to deeper waters, so you’ll probably go offshore. Salmon love cold water and they’ll dive deep to reach their ideal temperature.

September

Try catching Rainbow Trout – their aerial acrobatics make for a great show once you hook them. Salmon fishing is good as always.

October

Salmon migrate and move to the rivers. If you’re out to get them, move inshore, closer to the mouth of the river. The season is coming to a close and charter boats are being hauled out of the water.

November

The local fishing action moves to the Niagara River at this time of year. You can target Smallmouth and Largemouth Bass. Winter Steelhead fishing also kicks off.

December

Winter fishing trips are only for the most persistent anglers. Warm up, gear up, and get out there. The lower part of the river likely isn’t frozen, so head there and try your luck against coldwater fish.
