Fishing in Coco

Coco Beach, Costa Rica’s fishing scene seems to go from strength to strength. A small fishing village for centuries, the town has developed a real reputation among tourists since the 1990s. However, it’s still retained its charm. You won’t find any big hotel chains or overcrowded beach bars. That’s what makes it the ideal place to discover this magical country.

Head to the bay, the nearshore gulf waters, or the deep seas of the Pacific, and you can target some of the most sought-after fish on the planet. Tough-fighting Jacks and exotic Roosterfish rule the roost inshore, while a nearshore adventure will see you go after delicious Snappers, Groupers and Amberjacks.

More experienced anglers, however, will relish the chance to hit the deep waters. Here, you’ll find a year-round population of Yellowfin Tuna, with Mahi Mahi passing by in summer. If you thought that was exciting, wait until you experience the Billfish bite! Blue, Black, and Striped Marlin, along with Sailfish are all possible catches on a fishing charter from Coco Beach.

Inshore trips can last anywhere from a couple of hours to a full day on the water, with a range of different vessels to choose from. With the reefs just a stone’s throw from shore, you can explore the nearshore waters in just half a day. However, if you’re looking to head offshore, we suggest a full day trip or longer to go after all of the Pacific’s prized creatures.

Rules & Regulations

Every angler aboard a charter in Coco Beach will need a license. Sometimes, your captains will offer to buy them for you, but you can also get them online from INCOPESCA. You should also be aware that Roosterfish and Billfish are catch-and-release only, but your professional guide will make sure you stick to all the rules.

Coco Fishing Seasons

January

With plenty of sunshine and no rain, January is a great escape from the winter. You’ll most likely catch inshore species such as Roosterfish, Grouper, and Jack Crevalle.

February

February is typically the windiest month in the area, but you can still target all of the inshore species. When it comes to offshore trips, you’re most likely to catch Mahi Mahi and Marlin.

March

This is the hottest month of the year, so be extra cautious with sun protection. Fishing opportunities are promising as always for inshore species, while the deep seas start heating up, too.

April

It’s still peak season for Grouper and Jack Crevalle, so you may want to focus your attention on the reefs or inshore. However, you could still find some monster creatures offshore, too.

May

This is where it gets interesting for big game fishing! The peak season for Sailfish starts in May, and there’s also more Wahoo and Mahi Mahi out there. Roosterfishing inshore is also hotter than usual.

June

The fishing only gets better in June! This is when you can also catch Yellowfin Tuna and the peak season for Cubera Snapper begins, so wherever you head, you're in for an incredible adventure.

July

The dry season is long gone and heavy rains are on their way, although, not regularly. July is one of the best months for big game fishing, so dodge the showers and head offshore to get your fill.

August

Lots of species reach their peak in August, so make the most of your summer vacation by coming to Coco Beach. You’re very likely to catch Sailfish, Wahoo, and Marlin, while inshore fishing is great, as always.

September

You could say that September is a “peak month” all around. This is when you’ll get the most rain but also the best chances for both big game and inshore fishing, so come and catch 'em all.

October

As the rainy season stops, big game fishing slows down as well. You can still catch lots of Yellowfin Tuna and Mahi Mahi in the deep, so not all is lost. And, don't forget, inshore and nearshore are both great.

November

Cubera Snapper and Yellowfin Tuna are still easy to catch and don't forget the main star of the show – Roosterfish. Wherever you head, there's some exciting fishing to be had with some extra special rewards!

December

In winter, the focus switches from big game to inshore fishing. Spend the holidays targeting Grouper, Snapper, Jack Crevalle, and more in the shallow waters as you see out the year in style.
